Washing machine odor

My Whirlpool Duet washer GHW9200LQ is 5 years old and is used several times a week. An odor has recently been detected, like a mildew or moldy smell. Even after washing clothes with bleach, the odor reappears before 24 hours is up. I leave the door open and remove the soap/softener tray to dry it out, but it remains for days. I water being trapped or not pumped out somewhere?
Thank you!

Saw the Affresh ad (and others) just after posting this problem. I tried Affresh and it is somewhat helpful..it does "lessen" the odor. Curious to me that odor did not appear for 4 years of use with machine and correct HE detergent. I'm tempted to add a quantity of baking soda to the final rinse of cleaning cycle.

On another experimental note...maybe I've finally found a use for old underarm stick deodorants when they run out and you can't get get that last little bit out from the container! I'll throw a couple of them in monthly. LOL!

Odor in our duet washer...began when I stopped using vinegar...to get rid of the odor from kitchen cloths and towels...now the smell in ongoing. thougt it was our water.....tried Affesh...no go...not even for a day or two. I am going to return to the vinegar once a week on dish towels and cloths...am going to use the "shock" method tonight: 2 cups bleach in an empty machine on hot and wipe it down and leave the door open..

Musty odor

The following link can provide you with some good info on how to control and prevent mildew and odors in a front loader:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3608512-getting_rid_front_loader_mildew_odor

Several factors that DO matter when it comes to the proper care of a front loading washing machine:

1. Leaving the door open when not in use.

2. Checking the bellow after every wash for lost articles of clothing.

3. Checking the drain pump reservoir periodically for build up of debris.

4. Use of the proper detergent (HE only).

I personally own one of these washers and have never had a mold or mildew problem in the 9 years I've owned it by following this regiment.

Read through the link provided and let me know if you have any questions. I hope this helps you.

I have had my duet for about 5 years. I thought

The problem is commonly caused by debris building up in the drain pump. Over time it sours and begins to smell. The following link explains how to access the drain pump and clean it:

There are several other factors that can also contribute to front loader odors. The following link explains a things to look for and try:

Strong mildew odor in Duet washer

are you useing he detergent? if not this is your problem the washer cannot get ride of the soap so what it does is leave a layer of film in your washer and odor causeing bacteria forms in it. There is a product called AFFRESH you can buy it at SEARS it is made specifically for this. Do you leave the door open ragularly? The reason I am asking is because your washer is like your bathroom if you do not ventilate it properly it will grow mold and it needs to be cleaned. By leaving the door closed all the time it is very easy for the bacteria to grow.
So my advice is to leave the door open, make sure you are useing the correct soap (HE) high efficiancy soap, clean the washer with no clothes hot water and bleach and use the affresh or washer magic. Since you can smell the smell you are going to have to keep cleaning it abouit 2-3 times a month till it goes away. Then once a month. This is not a machanical problem or a whirlpool problem and is very commen in ALL front loader if you do not clean it regularly.

I have a Duet washer with a severe odor problem. We keep the door open when it is not in use. We have tried the Affresh tablets with no success. I am currently running a bleach cycle weekly, and it only...

The Duet has a filter trap that's pretty easy to clean. There could be debris catching residue and not allowing the washer to drain right. Remove the toe panel with a torx bit and turn the filter handlt to the left. Have towels handy because there is always a gallon or two of water left in washers after they drain! Cleaning the filter trap should be regarded as regular preventive maintenance.

Leaving the door open will actually make the problem worse because it dries out the odor-causing residue and makes it much harder to remove. If your washer stinks with the door open or shut it's time for a good cleaning before it gets worse! The area of heaviest buildup is always between the inner stainless tub and the outer plastic tub. After your washer has been cleaned you'll need to change your washing habits so odor doesn't return. If this doesn't remove bad odor you'll need a good washer cleaner.

WHirlpool Duet Washer

Swede, you need to replace the water inlet valve. Part number 8181694. This is an easy fix. Just remove the 3 screws that are in back holding the top on. Slide the top back and you will see the valve. Couple of screws and a clamp and it will come right off. Catriver..post back.
