Question about Olympus DM-20 Digital Voice Recorder
I received this response from the european Olypus support group :- Turn recorder on - Press STOP, FOLDER and MENU buttons and hold all of them for about 3 seconds or until display changes - then press PLAY button and that resets the recorder back to English. Olympus Digital Imaging Support Group

Add my voice to the fray, too! I googeled this posting because my DM-20 is in exactly the same boat: long period of no use, replaced batteries, now the display is in Japanese! Seems a bit much for a $200+ machine. Can't find any support online or in the manual for this issue. I will try sending directly to Olympus but if you find anything please post it , thanks.

Well, I found an answer that works! I used it and all seems to be well. See below:
1) Take off hold and put in voice mode. (2) Press 'display menu' button for a couple seconds to get to menu mode. (3) scroll down (using the lower end of the 'fast forward' button) by hitting it 6 times. (4) hit 'play' button once (5) scroll down once (using the fast 'forward button'). (6) hit 'play' button once,(7) scroll down once (using the fast forward button), 8) hit play button once. A bar will show up across the bottom of the screen (it takes a few seconds as the bar goes solid black). This reformats the recorder (you lose any recordings on it) and puts it back in English. You can try to download files before this to keep from losing any files on your recorder.

Well, it seems I am having the same problem with my DM-20 unit. After using it extensively for about a year and a half, it remained unused for several months, in the Voice - Hold mode. After this time, when I tried to use it again, the batteries were completely exhausted (no, no leakage at all). After fresh batteries were installed, the display showed the SYSTEM CHECK message and right after switched back to the Japanese language. I have browsed thru the product Instruction Manual (both the original and the one found at the Olympus site - both at the same level), but neither of them have anything about language setting procedures. Neither could I find any clues to that in their FAQ's section. I have written Olympus today (Jan/17/2007) requesting their support.
