Question about Magellan RoadMate 700 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

Frozen screen when turned on

I bought a second hand magellan 700. It worked twice and it worked fine. This afternoon, when I turned on the unit, it would "freeze" on the section on the (user 1) (user 2) (user 3) option. I touch all the screens, I touched all the buttons.. but it is FROZEN. I turn the unit ON and OFF repeatedly (ie unplug and replug because the on/off button will not work). HELP! TEL ME THAT I DID NOT GET A LEMON MAGELLAN 700. Thanks

    Hello Daniel

    Thank you for your suggestions.

re: "If you have a program that allows you to update the software, version 4.32 I'm guessing (or 5.14) then at that "secret" menu select NAND Flash Format and re-load the software..."

The software version of my magellan is 5.14. Yes, I was able
to go to the secret menu and I did select the NAND FLASH FORMAT.
How do I re-load the software? I did not get any CD when I bought this unit. I only got a USB connector.

I am willing to pay if you can make me a copy.

    Hello Daniel

'....Your NAND flash is cleared and you now have no way of loading the software back into your unit. What is your unit doing now? Does it say no map data/software? Is it still frozen at the user menu? let me know....'

It is still doing the same thing.. freezing at the user manu (even though the NAND flash is cleared. What do I do now?

    So frustrated.

Kevin, Hmm... it worked fine the first two times you ran it, then all of a sudden it freezes at the user screen?? I'm not sure if your able to do this, but at the user menu, try pressing the (-)zoom out key and the repeat button a the same time. -If it does bring up the "secret" menu, try clearing user data. -If you have a program that allows you to update the software, version 4.32 I'm guessing (or 5.14) then at that "secret" menu select NAND Flash Format and re-load the software. If you can't access the "secret" menu and it locks up hard at the user menu w/out any responsiveness, I would suspect the hard drive is either bad or has corrupt data. I'm not sure if you can order just the hard drive from magellan/thales/tomtom/shaw but if you can then just replace the hard drive, nand flash format (above) and re-install your software via usb. Additionally, not that it helps your problem, but atleast you would know the pwr and keypad work if this works, press Enter, Cancel and power button at the same time, as this SHOULD power off your unit. Let me know if any new symptoms/problems come up or if you need further instructions. -Daniel

I personally do not have a program that allows you to upload software. "If you have a program that allows you to update the software, version 4.32 I'm guessing (or 5.14) THEN"...etc..etc..

Your NAND flash is cleared and you now have no way of loading the software back into your unit. What is your unit doing now? Does it say no map data/software? Is it still frozen at the user menu? let me know.

Wow!! My screen just totally froze up. I turned off and on 3 times.. nothing. Googled magellan roadmate and it took me to their website, which was a totally waste of time and to another website that charges $30 for live chat with a technican. I googled magellan touch screen frozen... And here we are. I don't have the same model as above mentioned, but I did push menu and - at same time... TOTALLY FIXED IT!!! thank you so much!!

Maestro 4250 frozen after incomplete 2009 map up date

I had same problem on 3/28/09.

According to Magellan and other people who have experienced the same problem, this is terminal to the unit. It can be caused by downloading the 08/09 Magellan map upgrade, which can cause the unit to permanently lock up. Magellan is well aware of the problem, and should offer to replace your unit if you have the problem. If you elect to have it repaired, Magellan can download the map upgrade for you in the repair process. Here is a site noting the same problem:

Questions for Magellan: 1) why would they sell, in 2009, gps units with old 2007 maps loaded in them, requiring the purchaser to buy a current map, and 2) if there is a problem with downloading the current maps, why is there not an advisement or warning to the installer.

Other than replacing the unit, there appears to be no "fix".

Blue magellan screen-frozen

Thanks for coming back, although I'm starting to believe I am the last resort for tech support on these models.

This screen as with computers, is the blue screen of death. Unless you can still sync up with your computer and attempt to reload 3.56. If that didn't work, I would replace the hard drive which I'm sure you don't have lying around.

You could try opening the unit up (very gently), removing the hard drive (ribbon) cable, making sure the contacts are clean and re-inserting it.. other then that sissey.. in the shop we would format HDD & re-load the software. Does your computer recognize it?

Magellan 700 sound problem

1. Search for the file ENG_F.SND sound on google or yahoo or any search engine.

2. Connect RM 700 to PC, and create folder name SOUND_EU on RM 700.

3. Copy the ENG_F.SND to SOUND_EU folder.

4. Disconnect RM 700 from PC.

5. Turn on RM 700, and go to Option, configuration, language, and choose English.

6. RM 700 will load sound file and turn off.

7. Turn on RM 700, if it keeps showing the initial screen, then connect the RM 700 to PC, and DELETE the ENG_F.SND from SOUND_EU. It should be OK after you disconnect RM 700 from PC and turn it on again.

NOTES: My screen indeed locked at first as covered in the last step, so expect that to happen. Don't worry if you never get to do step 5 and 6. Connecting the USB, deleting the SND file and restarting it works and the sound is back even without the file there.

This only fixes the Female voice along with the beeps and clicks. The unit goes silent again if you select the male voice but switching back to the female fixed that. I assume "_F" in the file name must mean female.

Lost sound and audio

Road mate 700

The flash card hole is supposed to be empty - all you need should be on the hard disk BUT the first Roadmate 700 I purchased was empty i.e. no software loaded. The second failed due to bad power connection, the third worked but was factory refurbished! what a crass organisation Magellan is!!!

Try fiddling with the power connection that goes into the cradle that the unit sits on. The power connection is ultra sensitive. BUT, if you've only just bought the unit then you are in luck - return it and get your money - back Magellan Support is extremely poor.

I am binning my Roadmate and getting a Tomtom720 Go series with maps and cameras preloaded - it auto updates when it is on its cradle attached to my PC/internet.

Bin the Magella - 4 years of problems!!!!

Magellan Roadmate 700 can't power up 2nd time in car

Are you willing to part with it, I may be able to use it for parts [email protected]

Message: the tempature is to low

hah.. yes that is a strange coincedence. When this error appears, you can try to find someone else's unit and use it for spare parts. If you can find another unit to salvage from, then first change out the LCD w/attached thermometer wires. next to change is the hard drive. which, without having the software DVD can't be completed. I'm sorry Jerome but. there's not too much you can do with this error. -Daniel

Magellan Roadmate 700 GPS

If everything else is working fine, specifically the touch screen, then it's probably your speaker. open unit and check your speaker for anything stuck to the back of the magnet (on the speaker). make sure the cable going from your speaker to the keypad PCB (board) is pushed in all the way. you may want to even pull it out and re-connect it. make sure the unit is off while you do this and try to ground yourself with something. good luck and let me know how it turns out.
