I want to connect my AcerScan 620 to the USB port on my laptop. i can get a cable that will do this, but I think I also need a driver that will "talk to" the USB.

Get a usb cable... look at the back of the scanner so you know what the connector looks like... download software from www.acer-group.com then go under United States then Product support then go under Acer Tech Support. Download and install these drivers then plug in the scanners USB cable to the computer.
If the Acer has an parallel connection and not USB this indicated to me it is an older machine from the Win98 era.
In which case it will not work with Vista.
Indeed many newer devices do not work with Vista there is a real issue here
Check back with Dell on this.
