SOURCE: Installing software for my Sony Handycam DCR-HC96

Option 1:

If you want to use the USB cable to connect the Camcorder to the Computer to transfer the video to the Computer then:

(Applicable for Vista Operating System Only.)

This Camcorder does not support USB streaming with the VISTA Operating System. Use an i.LINK cable to transfer the video to the Computer. The i.LINK port is also called IEEE 1394 or Firewire port. (An i.LINK is a black D shaped connector with 4 or 6 pins. The type of cable to be used will depend on the i.LINK port of your Computer. The Sony Camcorder will have the 4 pin i.LINK cable and if the computer has the 6 pin i.LINK port, then you may have to use the 4 pin to 6 pin i.LINK Cable).

You can use any video capturing software like Windows Movie Maker to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer.

Refer this Link for the instruction to transfer the video to the Computer using i.LINK cable.

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C111893

NOTE: As the Camcorder does not support USB streaming with Vista, it is not required to use any Sony Device Driver to transfer the video to the Computer. You do not require any Drivers or Software from Sony to transfer the video from the Camcorder to the Computer using the i.LINK/Firewire interface.

Option 2:

(Applicable for Windows XP Operating System only):

If you are using a Windows XP Operating System then you have to install the USB Streaming Driver in the Computer from the supplied Software disk with the Computer.

Check this Link for the instruction to transfer video to a Computer using USB Streaming.

http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/documentLink.do?externalId=C222820

If you do not have the supplied Software disk then I suggest that you use the i.LINK cable to transfer the video.

Or you can purchase the software disk from this link:

https://servicesales.sel.sony.com/ecom/accessories/web/productSearch.do?searchOperation=partSearch&searchText=266675501

NOTE: Since the original supplied software is not available for free download now.

Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Handycam shows a bluish screen(DCR-HC32E)

did you happen to drop the cam? there could be a technical error with the LCD screen. take it to the nearest Sony service center and have them take a look at it. you can try resetting the cam and see if it changes anything.

DCR-HC32E

You need a FireWire cable and a computer with FireWire port. I have same camara - it comes with a base unit into which you have to plug in the camara. From that base unit connect the firewire cable (4pin) and take that to your computer which may have a firewire port (either 6pin or 4 pin) - depending on what kind of firewire port you have on the computer, you have to get appropriate cable ... it is my understanding that the camara doesn't come with this cable. I purchased a firewire cable with 4 pin connecter on both ends to connect to my IBM laptop with Vista on it. It works great after all this setups. It does not work with a USB cable for some reason.
