SOURCE: Where can I get a hp pavilion a520n power button

This is the power on switch located inside that power on button,

http://www.directron.com/atxswitch.html

The Power On button/switch is taken out of the Front Panel as a unit.
I use a hair dryer set to low heat, and constantly move the dryer back, and forth on the plastic of the Power On button, until the plastic is soft enough to remove the power on switch.

The switch itself is held in by plastic tabs of the Power On button. You can also dip the unit into real warm water to soften the plastic. (The switch is kaput anyway)

BEFORE you start! (Not shouting)

1) Computer unplugged from power, computer case open, observe anti-static guidelines.

Your body carries static. Not enough to hurt you, but will fry out (Short Circuit) the delicate hardware components inside your computer.

Again computer unplugged from power, TOUCH the metal frame of the open computer case.
This action will relieve your body of static.

{Should you get up, and walk away in the middle of working on your computer, when you return Touch the metal frame again}

2) The front plastic part of your computer is the Front Panel.
Cables (Wires) come from the Front Panel, and connect to the motherboard.
The area on the motherboard where these cables connect to, is the Front Panel header. A series of pins which protrude from the motherboard.

Sometimes there is an abbreviation printed on the motherboard next to the Front Panel header. Something like FRT_PNL_ 1, or similar.
With the Pavilion a520n you may see HPANEL.

Looking at the motherboard with the Processor to the top, and Ram Memory slots to the right, the Front Panel header is at the extreme bottom right corner.

As seen here on HP Support,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00072236&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=404643&lang=en

Scroll down to the illustration of the motherboard to view the Front Panel header. There is a photo of the motherboard also.

As you will note, the Front Panel header consists of two rows of pins.
Four across the top, five along the bottom.

If there are individual wires (twisted pairs) going to the pins of the Front Panel header, it is suggested that you may notes, and a drawing of what pin each individual wire goes to.

The reason is that if one, or more, individual wires are accidentally knocked loose, you will have a schematic of where they go.
HP Does Not supply this information.

When removing the Front Panel from the computer, you may not be able to remove it far enough, to easily access the Power On button/switch.
You may have to remove the Front Panel all the way.
You'll definitely need your notes/drawings then.

The individual connectors on the wires (Cables) from the Front panel, may be marked with abbreviations.
Some common ones are,

RST = Reset switch
PWR LED, or PW LED = Power On LED (Light)
PW1, SW1, PS-ON = Power On switch
HDD = HarDDrive activity LED (Light)

The connector on the end of the Front Panel cable to the motherboard, may be one solid unit, and not individual wires.
In this case you'll need to find out which wires are the Power On switch wires, and cut them out of the solid plastic connector.

Doesn't seem like a professional approach, but that's how it's done.
Many times the actual Power On button/switch unit, is no longer offered by the manufacturer, and cannot be found online, or otherwise.

The plastic rectangular connector is laid on it's side on a hard surface, and the area where the Power On wires go through is cut out. A square section is cut out.
This leaves the original rectangular connector into two halves.

These are plugged back into the appropriate spot on the Front Panel header. Then the replacement Power On switch wires are plugged in.

How to remove the Front Panel, and other parts replacement instructions can be found here on HP Support,

How much total memory will a HP a520n desktop computer hold. One source said max 1 gig yet another source said max 2 gig, which is correct.

Go to crucial.com and have them analyze your computer. They will tell you you can use 2gb, no matter what HP says, and it does work. I just went through the same thing. Saved me from buying a new computer because 1gb wasn't cutting it and I originally thought that was the max for a a520n. Not true. I do suggest going to HP and getting the Bios update from 2005 if you haven't already done that. My a250n runs great with 2gb ram, replacement 500 watt power supply, GeForce 6600gt GPU, and Audigy SE sound card. With optimized paging file and routine disk cleanup this thing still runs well enough to have a few years left in the old girl untill every new program requires dual or quad core 64bit technology and Windows 7 or above.
