Freezer/fridge won't get cold enough

Last week my side by side completely went warm...except the back of the freezer had a thick ice layer....lost everything!!!! I figured it was because I had the freezer totally packed. After emptying both sides, cleaning the coils and defrosting the ice from the freezer, it seemed like everything was going great. The ice maker started making ice again, and everything seemed to be getting cooler....but the controls are on the coldest setting and the freezer barely keeps ice cream frozen, and the milk in the fridge feels luke warm....help!!!!!

Same problem - freezer/fridge warmed up over a few days and wouldn't cool properly. Defrosted evaporator coils and cooling capability returns. Is this a bi-metal switch problem or a control board problem?

We had the exact same problem at least three times. The repair man was at our house today and told us that it can't be fixed and we should by a new one. He said the condenser is bad on it.

Kenmore model 5052201 stopped cooling/freezing all at once.

Thinking it is the relay as the compressor comes on then stops.

But it may be the compressor.

Madezmom, you have a defrost issue. If your model starts with 106 you more than likley have a bad defrost bi-metal, I will attach a picture of bad one. This sits on the evaporator in the freezer section behind the panel. You will have to remove the shelves and remove the back panel. Defrost the evaporator completely. The part number for the bi-metal is 2196155. See if yours is bulged like the one in the attached photo. If so, that's your problem..Catriver..post back.

You need to remove everything from the machine - turn it off, clean all the trays, shelves, etc. Completely wipe down the inside of the machine with warm soapy water to remove residue, and then wipe down again with vinegar and water. Once this is done, open up a box of baking soda and put one in the freezer and one in the refrigerator section. Turn on the machine, It may take a few weeks to get the smell out - especially if the smell has gotten into the insulation around the box. Good Luck!

Sounds like the drainage hole is blocked with ice, i normally take the back cover off the freezer and at the bottom you will see a build up of ice at the bottom, turn freezer off and carefully remove as much ice as you can, then pour some boiling water over the excess ice and in the middle you will see a drain hole make sure water then freely flows down drain hole. Other than that you could try switching your freezer off for 24 hours to clear ice.

Warming up

I recently had the same problem and this is what I discovered;unplugged and I pulled the frig. out, took off the lower panel and found the condenser, motor and coils covered in a thick layer of dust.Be patient and take the time to vacum all the dust out thoroughly, use a can of air to loosen up any that may be hard to get at.The be sure to reinstall cover and all screws. Now I have a frig in my basement,so I transfered all my items for the time being. I then pulled all racks and bin.Removed the back wall panel inside of freezer(held in with 2 screws just behind the light shield/remove by lifting up and out) I found the coils completely covered in a thick layer of ice.I then layed down some folded towels and let it thaw out over night.Next day I cleaned it out,put everything back and it's been working great ever since. If you don't have a secondary frig, preserve what you can with coolers and ice, and use a torch to melt the ice.Be sure to use the torch at a distance so as not to burn anything, let the heat melt the ice not the flame, take your time and be patient. Now if the coils freeze up again, and your sure the back is clean with good ventilation, then chances are your defrost heater may not be working properly and may need replacement. This is in an attempt to use a process of elimination to help keep repair cost down, good luck.

I had same issue this past week. Refrigerator up to 45 freezer up to 15. Ice would melt and then everything would get cold again. Ice formed on everything. Next thing you know it was warming up again. I knew the rubber seal on door flap that opens to let ice out warped during summer months because I keep it 78 in summer. Had that replaced today. Temperatures have gone back to normal and stayed ALL DAY (knock on wood). Check door flap seal sticking your hand up making sure you don't push in the water tab. You should be able to feel if it is warped/wavy like an old LP or not. Good Luck.

Hi,

All of your cooling coils on this model are located in the freezer. If you are cold enough in the freezer your problem is air flow to the fresh food section.

- There is fan behind the back wall of the freezer, be sure that is running.

- Look for frost build up on the back wall of the freezer, if present we have a defrost problem

- look for the duct or channels between the floor and freezer and top of the refrigerator they could be blocked with ice, if so we have a drain problem.

Let me know what you find and I will help you from there.

Everything in the freeze has a thick layer of ice

Typically, this is an indication that the seal on the door needs to be either cleaner or replaced. begin by cleaning it thoroughly, also clean the frame of the door. Then defrost the ice using a blow dryer and dry it. Then over the next few days you will know if it is the seal if the ice forms again.
