These printers monitor the cartridges and dont like you using aftermarket ie non Lexmark, or not made by lexmark cartridges. So Im wondering If you have tried 2 x brand spanking new OEM Lexmark cartridges, or if you are trying to use cheaper from net remanufactured or "for use in lexmark" cartridges. If this is the case then this is your problem and also very common.
Are you using a photo cartridge and a normal color one?
These I beleive can not be mixed in different slots.
- Photo cartridges you will only need one installed on the left side.
- Normal ink you will need two installed (Black on left and color on right) .
Also Lexmark themselves have a couple of documents on this issue, here and Here
But these efforts will all be useless unless you are using Brand New Original Equipment Manufactured (OEM) Cartridges. This I see day in and day out, I get a lot of people tell me they are using original when they are not in fact, You will know by the price and lexmark carts do not state "for use in"
I dont think it is a problem with the printer, if you are using both brand new OEM cartridges then the firmware fix from lexmark should solve or you are trying to mix Photo type and normal type carts.
But these days ink jet printers are non repairable (well too costly and uneconomical to repair) throw away items, the expense is in the inks and manufactures vertually give away the printers so you will buy their inks, and lexmarks are designed not to like refill and aftermarket inks as are most modern inkjets.
Hope this helps, please let me know if you are using real ink and have tried the firmware fix and still are having issues, but all i probally end up telling you is buy another and welcome to our disposable way of life;)
Regards
Steve
Thanks for your helpful comments Stephen, I have been using 'alternative' cartridges but strangely enough this one is a genuine Lexmark. The Lexmark cartridges are soooo expensive now that I'm not prepared to buy another cart that might not work. Althought the printer is only a few years old I will look for a new printer with cheaper carts - any ideas of ones that you could recommend?
Hi, having a "real" cartridge mixed in with a aftermarket can still lead to the issue, but I get it cartridges are expensive, but in all honesty if you want to use aftermarket cartridges, you better off going back in time and buying a old inkjet from before makers got so tricky to stop such practices. Old Epson's and HPs used to be great and can still be bought from recyclers and ebay etc but i don't really know of any that accept recycled stuff without causing you grief, I only see the terminal sick printers from use of poor quality consumables, and I see it every day, and send them to heaven often.
Maybe if you go to a ink recycler and speak to them they will know what is easy to keep going with their products.
To be honest I dislike inkjets, they are cheap to buy but expensive to run, and to me the real cost is the running cost, price per page. Inkjets run around 50cent a page. If you want to print in colour, which is expensive no matter which way you go, you should use a laser printer, Laser printers are toner based, much more reliable and run at 20 cents a page. the best on the market in my 25 years in the field view are Kyocera and Oki, the worst are Samsung and brother (my view). Kyocera colour lasers will cost you more to buy initially but are the cheapest and most reliable colour printers to run, and that is where you money really goes. Forget buy price, look at consumable cost, how many page each bit lasts for and divide it up to get cost per page, In truth your better off doing your colour prints at a department store, you cant do it cheaper at home and you have no maintenance or consumable worries.
We sell printers and you know where we do our colour print runs?.. we use a printer as it is cheaper, but i wont tell you that, as colour printing and selling of the costly products they use and killing off and repair of the results of cheap consumable use is where we and many like us make our money....
Or If you don't print much and have to have one at home, buy any inkjet and throw it away when ever it gives you grief, geez these days you can get them for 40 bucks new, but beware there are little tricks makers use to sell them cheap, the initial toners and inks in printers are not full they are starters, in the end you will get what you pay for, and nothing these days is designed to last 3 years, one year is standard for inkjets running aftermarket and that's if you are lucky and I kid you not. If you are clever get extendend warranty but it has traps too, most we reject if we see non real inks causing issues and a lot of warranties in fact exclude nearly everything, read them carefull and listen not to salesmen.... Welcome we live in a designed world of planned obsolescence

An 'incorrect cartridge' or 'missing cartridge' error can be displayed if:
http://support.lexmark.com/index?page=content&id=SO4738&segment=SUPPORTproductCode%3D&productCode=LEXMARK_X4875&locale=EN&userlocale=EN_US
X4850
The reason for the error code is of course due to an incorrect toner cartridge being used on the copier. You can turn the copier off, but it will not flush from memory. in order to correct the issue perform the following:
1. Turn the printer off
2. Remove the incorrect toner cartridge
2. Unplug the power cable from the wall outlet.
4. Plug the Printer back on
5 Turn the printer back on
You will see the message change to another message requesting to insert the toner cartridge.
