Black square on screen

I have a Panasonic F87. During the previews on a DVD the picture is fine. However, when the menu screen comes up a black square appears in front of the picture. You can see a small portion of the movie behind it. But the features are not accessible, such as adding captions. Sometimes, after you push the play button, you can see the movie, but most times you cannot. Sometimes you can advance the movie and the box disappears, but often it does not. Sometimes in the black box, characters such as @@@@@@@@ will appear. What can I do to get rid of the square so we can watch movies? Appreciate any help you can give.

Seems that you have to go into setup and look at the Closed Captioned screen set up.

Panasonic tc-20la2 black screen

Try calling up a Menu for Picture on the screen with your remote.  Also check that it operates the TV and not the VCR or DVD player.
Good luck.

My DVD player, stopped playing in color!

check to see if the coding is set to PAL or NTSC, when watching in PAL, NTSC shows up in black and white. ( NTSC is normal for the USA and a hand full of other countries... PAL is used in ASIA, EUROPE, and most everywhwere else).

Black out screen

I had the same problem once with my RCA television. It only happened on certain channels and didn't happen during commercial breaks. If I adjusted the volume on the tv the box went away, but came back shortly after. The problem ended up being some malfunction in the closed captioning. I turned it all off and changed the CC settings and never had the problem again.
