Fridge and freezer stopped working

if compressor is running and no cooling is present --possible damage when defrosting causing loss of freon

I guess the culprit in this case is the compressor.. Do you hear a sound when you are near the refrigirator.. it will be like a fan rotating at a high speed...

compressor failure --low freon--evap frozen over --evap fan failure

. Cut everything off for a few minutes then turn it back on and listen for a click from the compressor relay as the compressor tries to start.
Is the compressor motor running.If no check starter/overload relay.
Check to see if the condenser fan at the back underneath near the compressor is running. If no check fan.

Are the condenser coils near there warm or room temp. should be warm

Hi, clicking sound from compressor, means compressor not running (working) compressor overlay relay is what making that clicking sound, possible your compressor have a hard start, you can purchase compressor ( hard start kit ) from appliance store, your fans could be working, but compressor short cycling, you said fan not working? which one inside of ref, or one near to compressor, check fan, remove 2 wires from fan terminal, use ohm tester, place tester lead one on each fan terminal, if you get a beep sound (continuity) fan is o/k, if not, fan burnt out, replace fan, now if compressor is good, fans are good, then check or replace, defrost timer, but before doing any repairs, unplug ref, excessive water is because ref defrosting, because there's no refrigeration, remove your produce, leave ref. off for about an hour, then replug it, let it work for about another hour, then check to see if temp. dropping (colder) maybe you experiencing, low voltage, let me know what happened, then i can tell you exactly, what's the problem. good luck.

Sounds as though the compressor has stopped working. It feeds both compartments with control from a printed circuit above the top door.Where all your red lights are ablaze! (This can be replaced by removing the 2 screws and "clicking" out the small panel) Check that the compressor is running at the bottom rear of the fridge/freezer before anything else.

my Matytag msd2456dew fridge fan is running, no ice bulid up on coils in freezer section, but no cold air to freeze anything in freezer section or cold air in fridge section. what can be the problem?

Well mine went through some of the same thing the fridge put out less and less cold ait and the freezer started to thaw just a tad on max settings. Mines about 8 years old and a kenmore.
Made the decision on an opportune time when Sears was having an additional 10% off sale..... my problem will be fixed ina bout 2 hours when my new fridge is delivered. The sad truth is (I now its cliche) they don't make um like they used to. Last fridge i had lasted nearly 20 years. Now if you get more than 5 out of an appliance you're doing good. Good luck but it sounds like the compressor died. You'll either need an expert to come out (think they have a min fee of $100 or more) or repalce it.

In back of the refrigerator is a removable panel behind which is the compressor. Listen for a hum and a click. If you hear those sounds the compressor may have failed. Behind that same panel is a condenser where heat is removed from the refrigerating system. Make sure it is clean and check that the fan operates when the compressor runs.
