Hi there

If you are using a Windows computer 2000/xp/Vista you need no software Windows has all the facilities it needs. If the Computer cannot detect the camera when it is plugged in to the computer USB socket and switched on and set to up load. Then there would appear to be a fault with the camera or battery. I suggest you remove the card from the camera and try to get it read by a friend or processing station to establish if in fact the card has images/data on it.
To learn about the new and free version of Olympus Master 2 software go to: http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/oima_softwareMaster.asp Click on 'Free Download' to register your email address to receive an email containing a link to download either the Windows or Mac version. This software replaces all previous versions of Camedia Master 4.x and Olympus Master 1.x and is Vista compatible.
The software that originally came with the camera is not Vista compatible. Go to www.olympusamerica.com and click the link for software downloads and then click the link for the free download of Olympus Master 2. This is the software that is now compatibel to Windows Vista.
Hp has digital software for most digital cameras to work with Vista the link should help. http://www.hp.com/united-states/consumer/digital_photography/free/software/index.html
I had this same problem, I'm using Vista on my HP laptop and I managed to correct it. Apparently HP like to customize Vista and when connecting some USB device's they don't recognise them as what they should. A USB mass storage device. You will need to connect the camera to the computer, the camera will come on then click the ok button so it selects PC. Wait until it finishes its search click cancel and open device manager, scroll down and below Network Adaptors you should see an expandable tree with an yellow exclamation mark named Portable Device's --> FE-280/X820/C520 you will need to right click on the FE-280/X820/C520 icon and select "Update driver software". Then select "Browse my computer for driver software" then select "Let me pick from a list of device driver's on my computer" Scroll down till you see "Universal serial bus controllers" then select "USB Mass storage device" in the next window. It should all work fine now! If it still doesn't work try selecting "Portable devices" then select "WPD File system device" --> "Microsoft WPD filesystem Volume Driver".
Hope it helps.
Great, thanks very much for your help.
