Question about Sony KP-51WS500 51" Rear Projection Television
A local repair man came in the house & in 5 minutes came to the conculsion it was a bad blue crt (pix tube), i had done looking on the sony parts store and was given a price for the part of $146.. He gave a price of $375 to install (+ the $70 to diagno.), now is his price too high, is the tv worth fixing since he also said the red & green can also go not now but down the road since this is a common problem; can this be an easy fix for anyone, meaning could i try to replace it or just leave it upto a repairman?
If you have a service manual or the experience to do this then I guess you can repair it. You do need a cross hatch generator to do an alighnment and sometimes an ocilliscope to adjust horizontal alighnments as per the service manual. Your paying for what the man took years to learn as repairing TV sets is not an overnight thing. As to the worth its up to you, do you wantt to invest this much money in a set that cost you a bundle?? How old is it? will answer your Question as they usually "made" to go for at least 5 to 7 years. After that its a crap shoot and if its older I wouldnt invest a dime in it. Unless you know how to repair it I would say buy a new one as the other tubes may go out a week from now or it could be 3 years from now as we TV techs are not fortune tellers. Good Luck
