I have a Dell Dimension XPS Gen 4 with 2005 Media Edition OS. I have been able to watch TV and record programs with the DVR. Now however when I record a program and attempt to watch it, it starts out playing, then the screen goes blank and I get a message digital audio on the screen. So I can hear the program, but can't see it. Dell techs had me reinstall my software to correct the problem and of course it didn't. Any ideas? My system is current with SP3, I run 2 anti-spyware programs daily and run McAfee virus scanner weekly.

Hello Anonymous,
You did not specify if you are using a DVR capable cable/satellite box, which I what I presume is the case. That DVR has two tuners in it - each tuner allowing you to watch and/or record two programs at one time and in any combination. If both of those tuners are used for recording then you cannot watch another "live" stream as there no available tuners to tune and display (or stream to the DVR hard drive for recording). You can only switch between the two recording programs.
As a side note, if your TV has a built-in tuner, you can split the cable and have one going to the DVR and the second run going to the TV set. You can then use the TV's built in tuner and watch what anything it can get. It won't get scrambled digital cable but will get analog and Clear QAM channels.
There is a reset jumper on the motherboard or look for similar issues on various Dell PC forums and how the were fixed.
I know there are special programs that you have to pay for to retrieve the PW, as a last resort.
If you have a dual receiver, you can record to TV 2 and watch any program on TV 1. If you have 2 recordings taking place at the same time, you can only watch what is being recorded.
With a dual receiver, you can place the receiver in single mode and watch a different program even if 2 recording are taking place. In single mode both TV 1 and TV 2 will be watching the same program.
A solo DVR you can record to tuner 2 and watch what you want on TV 1. With the VIP 622 receiver, you have the Record Plus option, you can have all recording go to TV 2. If 2 recordings take place, then TV 1 and TV 2 are used.
If it is only during watching a recording on the DVR then it may be the DVR that is the problem. Does a recording always break up at the same point? If so then the recording itself is bad and this may be due to a poor signal being received. If the breakup occurs randomly then the DVR may not be able to read the data from the recording media (Hard disk or DVD - you did not specify). The obvious first step is to try the DVR on another TV.
Well no matter the DVR, you should be able to record 2 programs at once...but you CANNOT watch a 3rd live while they are recording...also, if your DVR is hooked up to more than one tv and someone is watching something else in the other room, it will not record 2 at once, either. You can watch RECORDED programming while 2 others are recording, but not live tv.
You might want to check how many "inputs" your DVR has...most have 2 which allows the double recording...if you have an older DVR maybe you only can do one at a time. On my DISH box, they call these "TV1" and "TV2".
