Gateway Laptop DVD/CD Problem

Check device manager see if driver is showing for cd/dvd
If you have a recovery partition on the laptop You can reinstall your drivers and software using your recovery option.
Recovery should be in START/ALL PROGRAMS/SYSTEM RECOVERY (you may need to click Gateway Utilities first).
Then select application& driver recovery

you might try taking a q tip and some alcohol and clean the eye ( a little glass looking circle ) that reads the disk. Do not touch it with your fingers. Sometimes dust or dirt can get on it and it will not read the disk. This also works on cd players as well as dvd players.

Are you sure yours is a DVD player? It could only be a CD-CD writer, which will NOT play DVDs.
Open your control panel ->system->hardware->device manager and click on the DVD/CD-ROM drives icon. The listed devices will tell you if you really have a dvd player or not. If you do really have a dvd player, try a different dvd

you shouldnt need to disassemble the whole laptop more than likely there will be a couple of screws holding it in on my laptop it had a small cd looking symbol etched into the plastic next to the screw i unscrewed that one and my dvd drive pulled right out

try rolling back the driver

DEVICE MANAGER UNINSTALL THE DRIVE THEN RESTART PC AND REINSTALL
THEN DO A DISK DEFRAG

Uninstall the dvd/rw driver, and reinstall it from the Gateway website. Look for your laptop model there, and they have all the drivers and software for your laptop components.

Reinstall the program if you have a stand alon copy, or it may be on an application disk that came with your system.
