When I turn on the camcorder an error message appears saying 'lens cover not fully open, turn off then on again'. Tried this and does not work. I can hear the motor trying to open the cover but nothing happens. When I try to open the blades with my fingers they move freely. Please help!
OMG! I had the same issue and blew on the lens. To easy to be true, but it worked! I thought maybe it was a fluke, so I turned the camcorder on and off several times, and it worked every time! Sure beats the $341 Sony was going to charge to fix it!!!!

I blew and blew but the lens cover wouldn't budge. So I used an air pump and blew high pressure air on it and still no go. Encouraged by you all's success I didn't give up. I used a small scribe (like a dentist's pick) and separated the gaps in between the lens cover lid and blew air inside each gap. Cover started partially opening. I repeated the process of blowing air in between the cover sections with air pump and yeppie... success at last. Working like a charm. And I am looking like a hero in front of the wife. Thanks ya'll.

I have this problem on my sony dvd403, try to blow some air using airblower for cleaning cameras and it works, maybe it was some dust that was catched between those covers.

I had the same problem with my Sony handycam DCR HC53E. Followed the advice on this forum, and used a balloon pump to blow air onto the lens - it released the mechanism & I used my fingers to open the lens cover completely. The air solution works!

Used air compressor to blow air into the lens cover, forcing it to open. Did this repeatedly. Lens cover began working & has worked since.

I have faced the same problem today with DCR-DVD403 (very low and careful use). I can see this issue reported in couple of sites by different consumer and couldn't locate any recall information.
Pls. let me know if anybody has a solution.
Regards,
Abbas
Not throwing up any sort of a code however the lense cover will not open. It makes a clicking sound as if it were opening but it does not move.
