Is the error message coming before bios starts to load XP from harddisk, or after?

If it is coming after XP starts then it may be driver issue.

If it is coming before XP, then it may be a question of incorrect bios for the hardware in your laptop.

In case of your laptop the easiest method would be using software from Hiren's Boot CD as it's pretty hard to open it up and reach for the CMOS battery or the jumper and I wouldn't recommend doing it especially if it's under warranty.

If you initialize the disc with the new OS disc it should format with no problem. The password is only to encrypt the information, not to prevent access the disc.
