There was a small layer of black particles on the bottom. When I turn it on it spins, but not very fast. I can smell rubber burning. The water is also draining very slow. I'm thinking belt, but it looks like the pump is direct drive off of the motor. This unit has the service panel in the front on the bottom.

your problem is probably the coupling that ataches the motor to the transmission , take the skirt of the washer off , take the motor off and you going to see the rubber coupling if is bad just change it , cheap part

You are right on about the belt. If the tub every gets jammed by a full load and has trouble turning, the drive belt can get heated up ( kind of like spinning tires on the road...you get a smell and everything still works).
I would suggest pulling the front cover to expose the belts...look underneath. There are usually two one for the drive and one for the pump. I'd replace them both... with extreme heat, it can change the belt enough that it won't operate correctly with bigger loads.

Burnt smell, Spinning slowly. It does aggitate but seems sluggish. I took the belt off and thaere was a heavy residue. All wheels (pullys) turn freely. The belt seems to be the problem, it is on order.
the water wont drain and when it does the water goes really slow it also wont spin and it smells like the motor is going
