LCD screen shows weird colours

The camera lcd screen on the back is displaying weird colours and distorted pictures. When a photo is taken the image is very weird in colours and horizontal lines when displayed on the CD (not matching what was shown in viewfinder when taken) and the photo itself on the computer is also distorted. Lens is OK. Have checked all menu settings and butons, reset CF card, but still no luck ANY IDEAS? Cheers David

I think I have a similar problem. The lines on my camera are vertical and they get worse the longer I have the camera turned on- for more than a minute, until the lcd screen is almost impossible to see. I read the solution about replacing the CCD but I have no idea what that is and if I can do it.

  • vital_diaper Dec 25, 2007

I dropped mine on hard cement and when i brought the camera upon light i can see the distortion, like veritcal lines and its like half and half...i mean when i upload the pic to the computer you can see it but...when i turn it on and take pictures i can see distortions like blurry and stuff...i dont know what to do...i cant take back to the store i bought it cuz i lost my receipt and threw the box out...this sucks!

Have the same problem with my Fuji S5000---bleeding lines of green yellow on the image --the LCD s and memory are fine because they show excellent images to previous photos and to the boot data. How do you replace the CCD ? Where does one get a new one ??

Distorted lines and unnatural colours on the lcd screen, same with image when photo is taken. I put the camera back to default settings, made no difference. Had a camera shop check the lense with laser and it is fine. Shop suggested sending it back to agent to have it reformated?

I recently had the same problem with my z612 including horizontal lines on screen and very white images. I was able to fix the problem however it took 12 hours and a lot of frustration. The problem started when my 1 year old pulled the camera off the table onto hardwood floor. It had no apparent damage but took bad pictures. The problem was in the f-stop apeture and shutter. Both are made of small plastic flaps that open and close. A small disc with 6 slots rotates to move the 6 f-stop flaps. A solenoid actuates the 4 shutter flaps. If you shine a light into the lens and look in you will see that the shutter does not open/close properly or that the f-stop opening is no longer approx round. This happens when the plastic flaps fall out of position due to impact. This can be fixed but requires most of the camera to be disassembled to get to these delicate parts. It is very difficult to reassemble the lense assembly which includes the zoom lense, the image stabilizer, and the shutter assembly all of which ride on different cam tracks within two concentric plastic tubes. I do NOT recommend repairing this yourself unless you are crazy like me. Better off to buy a new one.

I got the same problem - When I take the picture and look at it later on the screen of the camera it's fine but when I upload it on my computer I get these really weird lines of different exposure. It's a laptop running on vista which is a new machine and never had the problem on my old computer.

When i turned my camera on the screen was all white and sometimes it showed the horizontal lines on it..but i couldnt see any menus or pictures unless i loaded the on the computer. i had a friend open it up and he found a foam like piece that had fallen and caused a wire to short out. when he took the foam piece out, the camera was working fine again.

I WAS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM BUT TOOK BATTERY OUT AND LEFT OUT FOR 3 DAYS. I put the battery back in and every thing is fine. The camera has a internal battery which maintains memory for 3 days while battery is not installed. Not sure really what cause the problem but seems to me what ever it was was being held in memory so once the memory was cleared do to no power every thing is fine .... gl I hope it works for you

SOURCE: camera showing/taking distorted images

According to many respected sources with far more expertise than myself, the symptoms you are describing also fall within the realm of Canon CCD failure. In Canon's Service Notice: CCD Image Sensor Advisory, they outline the most common symptoms (distorted images, LCD showing only a black screen, etc.). They have conveniently limited the description to the bare minimum. More symptoms of the failing CCD include: pictures appearing on LCD show up with severe color variations (pink-purplish or green tint), colored "streaks" or "lines" throughout pictures, and wavy distortions in image. Most of these symptoms include the color variations, but not always. The lines or waves can appear in any direction and with varying degrees of severity. Some LCDs do not go black, but turn totally purple. Here is a link to a very informative article that should clear up any questions you might have.
Digital Camera Repair Blog

If nothing else, call the Canon Customer Support Center at 1-800-828-4040. They will ask questions to identify whether or not you are having the same symptoms as described in the Product Advisory. I have been through this twice, and both times they were very nice and very helpful. Even if you don't qualify for the free repair, it didn't cost a thing to find out.
I hope this has been helpful.

I have a Canon Powershot A70 and when I take a picture now, the display shows a photo with horizontal lines across with very little color. Is there anything I can do? Donna

Dear dkserv:

This is almost certainly a CCD image sensor problem. The PowerShot A70 has a Product Advisory on this very issue and if you are indeed experiencing it, Canon will repair the camera at no charge regardless of how long you've owned the camera.

If the LCD screen shows this distortion in all shooting modes, yet you can see the menu (press the MENU button) just fine and/or any images taken previous to the malfunction without distortion then you've got it!

Call Canon Tech Support at 1-800-828-4040 (M-F; 8 am - midnight EST) and tell them you think you might have the CCD Image Sensor issue and they will take care of it.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Sony Mavica MVC-FD75 Digital Camera pictures taken come out as colour negatives

If you can use the LCD to take a photo and then use the LCD to review it later then the fault can't be with the camera. Have you tried checking the photos on another computer? Maybe your software is corrupt and needs uninstalling and then reinstalling again. Actually, from memory this camera has a few effects and one of them could be a negative. Check that you haven't switched the effect on by mistake. You'll find it in the camera's menu. What's causing the distortion I'm not sure.
