Hi i had the same problem. I found that this did the trick for me:

Try looking for the drive in the "Disk Management".
Right click on "My Computer" or "Computer" and select "Manage" then select the "Disk Management" item.

If you can see the drive, but there is no drive letter assigned, you may need to format it for your operating system or create an accessible partition on the drive. You can access all these options by right clicking on the drive from the "disk management" screen that you should be on.

mine needed to be initialized (by right clicking on it) and then i formated it

Good Luck!

Hi - thanks for your quick response, much appreciated .........I will try again to explain!!

We have purchased a 250Gb Maxtor portable hard drive which I was told was plug and play. We have followed the instructions for connection but no drive letter is showing up and the external drive is lit up and making a constant beeping noise. The computer doesn't seem to be recognising that an external drive has been connected.
To test our computer out I have connected an 8Gb memory stick to the processor and it shows up as drive H immediately.
FYI - we have XP running on our machine.
Hope you can help!! Thanks

Unable to read external HDD after plugging it to a Mac (previously it is readable via a Windows PC)

Chances are it was formatted as NTFS format by the PC which is not MAC compatible. You will need to reformat the drive in HFS format if you want it to work as a MAC disk only or in FAT32 format if you want to read it in PC and MAC machines.

Plugged in external hard drive and does not appear on desktop

Go to Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Managemant and see if the drive appears there. If it does, you may need to delete the partitions on the drive and create new ones. If this doesn't work, you may need to contact the manufacturer for a possible replacement.

Lacie External Drive won't turn on (blue Light doesn't go on)

Inside the LaCie D2 250GB (300770) external harddrive's case, is a 250GB IDE (PATA) harddrive that is 3.5 inches across in width.

A desktop computer sized harddrive. (May be a Western Digital WD25000JB)

The harddrive plugs into a small circuit board, (Bridge board), and the circuit board has a USB port on it.

Using this Western Digital Passport for an example,

http://www.xbitlabs.com/misc/picture/?src=/images/storage/wd-passport-250gb/p3.jpg&1=1

Scroll down to the second photo, and left-click on it. The case of the external harddrive is shown open.
Inside is a 2.5 inch laptop sized harddrive.
An aluminum tape strip covers the small circuit board, attached at the back of the harddrive.

The second photo down on this page, shows you the small interface circuit board, that the harddrive plugs into, with the aluminum tape removed.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/wd-passport-250gb_2.html

(Another design has wires coming from the small circuit board, to an interface the harddrive plugs into )

It is this small circuit board that goes bad in a LaCie. QUITE common.

Solution?

Simple.
1) Obtain a 3.5 inch IDE external enclosure
2) Remove the 3.5 IDE harddrive from the LaCie's case.
3) Install the harddrive out of the LaCie into the external 3.5 IDE enclosure.

An example of a 3.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure,

I cannot retrieve my files from the wd 250gb

First instinct is that your drive has failed. I would remove the drive and insert it into a system to test. If it works, then it is the housing from the external drive that failed. If the drive does not work once inside your system, then the drive is bad. Good luck.
