I bought a GE GSS20IEPH Side by Side Refrigerator in 2005, every 2 years almost to the date I have had to replace the heating element that prevents the back of the freezer from frossing over and stop cooling. I am now replacing my 3rd heater in 6 years, is this normal, could something else be wrong?

No shouldn't have to do this, are you installing part WR51X10101 heater?if so have you ever had to replace the motor board?do this when you're in the freezer go on top of the evaporator coil, look at the sensor or thermistor same thing,it looks like a white bullet part wr55x10025,look at it,if it has a black ring around it you have to change it,ge had problems with these thermistors, also everything on this fridge runs through the mother board open up the back cover and look at the board if you don't have 7 black relays in the board you have to get the newest board in there, this could be taking out your heater, board part wr55x10942p go here look at picture,if you don't have all the relays on left bottom side get a new board if sensor has black ring replace that too.i've never had to replace a heater again on a fridge and not that soon, make sure no wires are shorting out anywhere that could take out the heater
https://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Control-Board/WR55X10942P/4512753?replacedManufacturerPartNumber=wr55x10942
also i have a diagram of the board it shows you what's on the board if you look at j11 and j9 these are the connections for the defrost heater, the j8 is for compressor so if you jump out j9 and j11 the heater will come on and no compressor with the gray wire connector removed from the board.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/zenzoidman/4482598198/sizes/o/in/photostream/
and i have another site that shows you everything about the board that's very helpful
https://www.scribd.com/document/243353634/GE-Electronic-Refrigerator-AC-Diagnostics-Manual
if your board is the older board i would call ge first, tell them what's been happening and i've seen them send parts to people for free or short money,it's worth a call all they can say is no we can't help you or they could help you out, i'd call.can you do me a favor i've answered a few peoples questions and haven't heard back from them only like 2 people out of like 50 can you just let me know you got this and let me know how you make out thanks and i hope this helps you out.that ge diagnostics manual shows you alot of good stuff.make sure all the wires are in good shape that go to the heater, change out the thermistor also there's a t-stat on top of coil i would change out the t-stat and thermistor if something is bad it could be keeping the heater on longer than it should be and short living it,any wire connections that you have cover them with sealant if you have wire connectors anywhere in there put sealant in there so no water can get into wires and check the board.good luck hope this helps you.

Something to check for. Is the top of the refrigerator door lower than the freezer door? If so the ref. light may not be turning off all the time. Pull bottom panel off to expose hinges. The ref hinge should have an adjuster. Adjust door up to be level with freezer.

SOURCE: GE Side by Side stopped cooling

This sounds like the defrost heater is bad or dead. The refrigerator will not cool because frost is building up on the evaporator coils in the freezer section and the fan can no longer push air past the coils. You will find that the freezer will build up with frost.
If you are brave enough, remove the cover in the freezer and you will see the coils are completely covered with frost (ICE). At this point with the refrigerator unplugged ( remove food). get a hair dryer or heat gun and melt all the frost. You will notice a heating element ( looks like a tubed light) -element will looked burnt out.
Replacing it at this point is easy. Before you start though, try to get the manual for your system and call around for a local appliance parts store to see if the part is readily available.

If you are sure the sound is coming from the freezer side, then yes you should empty the frrezer and take off the rear shield. While the heating element is normally encased in glass or plastic. Water droplets hitting an electrical connection could also cause a sizzling sound.

Fridge works on gas...but not on AC

Your heater should measure 44 ohms, give or take 10%.

95 Ohms is way off. The RM2310 uses a 92 ohm heating element, perhaps you installed / were sold the wrong heating element?

Icemaker water overflows into freezer

the condensate tube is run incorrectly on this model and goes uphill into the area above the refrigerator where there is a condensate pan. This will plug and back up and cause this problem. I have fixed ours several times but it always came back. The last time I bought a new clear plastic tube and reran the condensate out the back of the refrigerator and down through my floor. It's all downhill now and seems to have fixed the problem.

I have a GE side by side refrigerator that keeps blowing the defrost heater element. MODEL # TFT22JWDA WW SERIAL # TZ264141 I bought it from a GE dealer about 5-6 years ago. It ran fine for 3 years,...

In my GE side-by-side there is a defrost temp sensor located near the top of the evaporator coil. I think the control board uses that temp sensor to know when it should be done defrosting.

On the schematic of my fridge (link below), the defrost thermistor is part number 240 in the diagram (not part number 241, which is a different temp sensor located adjacent to the one you want)

I don't know why the defrost element would fail immediately other than incorrect supply voltage or just a bad defrost element.

Freezer keeps freezing up

You must change the defrost heater element, located in the back of the freezer compartment at the bottom. You have to remove the four screws, two on each side of the panel on the back wall of the freezer. The heating element located at the bottom has two wirers connected underneth on both sides of the element. The wires have female connectors which slide onto the male spades on the element, and can be easily removed. The single element heaters are now being replaced with a dual element heaters at the manufactures request. A refrigerator which I have repaired twice failed again when I replaced a single element with another single element heater after two years. I was informed only after a second trip to the same store to replace the part that General Electric suggested the dual element after they realized there were so many problems with the single element. I think G.E. should have factory recalled these units after they knew there was a problem. I also think I should not have to pay 38 dollars twice, and I should have been given the dual element the first time I had this problem!!!!!! I am a electronic and appliance technician and didn't have to pay for labor,But I am going to contacting G.E. about a refund for atleast one of my part replacements. I should been givin the dual element the first time. I recommend that anyone that reads this post that has had this problem do the same. My refrigerator was less than two years old when this problem first occured The dual element doesn't have to work as hard and will work much Longer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
