Replacing Power Cord Kenmore Progressive Upright

I read your comment on replacing the power cord on the Kenmore Vacuum and got the vacuum opened and right to where the cord should go but the wires are not connected. I have a black wire with a switch on one end and a white wire on my power cord. Inside I have a black cord and another black cord with white stripe coming up from below. Then I have a small circuit board with black and white smaller wires. Also a light with a black and white wire coming out of it. I am assuming I connect black with other black wires and the white wires with the black wire with the white stripe. Does that sound right to you. Thanks for any help. Steve

That actually sounds correct, if it's the model I'm thinking of. As long as you're talking about connecting to the wires that are held in by the wire nuts you should be good to go.

When I turn on the unit and push on the level that draws the "arm" back, it immediately shuts off. I return it to the upright position and turn it on again and repeat the process. Same thing...

seems like there is a short in the unit. it is extremely hard to find kenmore parts. i would probably just go out and buy a new vacuum. Kenmores arent worth fixing.

I have a Kenmore Upright Model # 11630412001 with a broken power cord

Normally, you would leave the current power connections attached and then line up or label the new cord lines with the old.

There should be a common ground, easy enough to dsitinguish.
A hot, normally black.
A return, normally white.

These may be swapped it the existing wire colors are.

Red = new black
Black = new white
Green or Blue = Green or bare.

I'm a bit surprised t read your post as the cord should have come with connection instructions if the replacement cord is different in color scheme from the old.

ALWAYS TAKE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING ON HOT LIVE POWER. NEVER MAKE CONNECTION CHANGES WHILE THE VACUUM IS PLUGGED IN.

IF AFTER YOU CONNECT THE NEW LINES, TEST THIS BY TURNING ON THE VACUUM AND TURNING IT OFF RIGHT AWAY. IF YOU HAVE POPPED A BREAKER OR SEEN BURNING, YOU HAVE TO SWITCH THE BLACK AND WHITE WIRES.

The best thing is to always go online and find the wiring layout for you model.

If you have any doubt, pleast post the wire colors you do see now coming to the connection terminal and post the colors coming out of your new power cord.

I need to replace the power cord.

You need to remove the handle and the front housing then you'll see where the connections meet. Then you should able to get it off and replace it.

Pull the cord all the way out and see if it's contaminated with anything sticky. Also check the guide rollers that the cord rides in and see if they are rolling smoothly and without resistance - they may also need cleaning. If so, clean it off and try again.

If not, it may be the spring reel itself in which case you may need to replace it.

I would suggest checking the hoses for clogs. Especially the hose right after the carpet brushes. Don't forget to clean off your brush. Hope this helps.

Replacing the electical cord on Kenmore Progressive Vacuum

To the right of where the cord comes out of the machine is a large screw. Remove it, and slide the upper handle assembly free.
Then, on the front of the machine, remove the screws located toward the top of the vacuum just inside the bag chamber cover. This will allow the front panel to be removed, giving you access to the cord from the front.

If you push the reset, it should push in and if nothing happens, then there is a problem with either your cord, switshes or motor.

May need to break the unit down to replace the cord,there should be some tec screws under the belt cover to remove the motor housing cover, may be two to thee wires. the rest should be simple.
