The tub is out of balance. When it starts hitting the sides, stop the washer and move your clothes around inside the tub to balance the tub. Now start it to spin again. This should stop the tub from hitting the sides.

Sounds like one of the springs going from the tub to the frame could be broke or unhooked. Also, the washer could be out of balance.

SOURCE: tub wobbles terrably in spin mode

Hi,
This is normally caused by defective dampers. Just like car suspension, these even-out the vibrations of the drum.

When worn, the drum just bounces wildly on it's springs.

The metallic banging should be avoided by foam buffers fitted inside. These frequently fall off unnoticed. They just need gluing back on with impact adhesive.

Here is a typical diagram of a washer - click HERE Move your cursor over the damper on the bottom left of the drum to see it.

Look online at spares centres for your make and model, and look for keywords of - suspension, shocks, shock absorbers or dampers for your parts.

They are fairly easy to fit with the back removed.

Thanks for using Fixya! If this has provided a solution, please rate as such. Thanks.

My cabrio will not spin or complete a wash cycle. Acts like iit's unbalanced even when empty. Keep getting an F51 error code

it is most likely a bad center bearing. Was it loud when it sup last? If it was then the bearings are going bad. If not spin the tub by hand and see if its stuck if it is work it back and forth and see if you can break it free. That is still a bad bearing. Also try spinning the basket by hand as fast as you can and see if the bearing sound like they are grinding or smooth. If the bearing seem ok then push down on the tub ring and try to push the tub and basket down it should take quite a bit a pressure to push the tub down is its easy and you can bounce the tub up and down it the washer like a basket ball then you need new support rod they keep the tub stable during spin and when the springs on these go bad they allow the tub to bounce during spin and that causes the unit to go out of balance and stops spinning.

Drum wobbles when empty

can be caused by a broken counter balance spring. Ur washer may be equipped with one or more counter balance springs which help to absorb the natural movement of the spinning tub. If a counter balance spring fails the tub might lean in one direction more than another and it will shake and cause vibration.

The tub continues to go off balance in spin cycle. Starts out smooth then starts to wobble terribly til the UL shows and shuts down. Support rods are good

There is a little device inside the washer that allows the agitator to spin independent of the drum. If this gets stuck, the washer will try to spin the whole drum instead of just the agitator. This will cause the washer to think the load is too large or out of balance, causing the error code. On some Whirlpools this device is just a washer.

Off balance spin cylce

The base of the tub assembly rests on a white plastic ring called a 'snubber'. If any type of lubricant gets in this area, the tub will wobble excessively. The major cause for this issue is a failed transmission where oil has leaked out and into the snubber. The transmission may be warranted for 10 years. Check your owners manual. A good method to check for oil is to tilt the machine back and remove the plastic cover in the center of the pulley, if it contains oil, the transmission is leaking also look at the inside cabinet wall for signs of oil splatter.

Spin

Does this happen with every load? I've had this happen occasionally but it was caused by one or two heavier when wet pieces of clothing that caused the tub to get off center and it would wobble out of control. By just rearranging the wet clothes to balance the tub it stopped wobbling. But only after making sure that the heaviest objects were on opposite sides if the tub.
