I believe that you are experiencing an intermittent problem with what's called your florescent lamp ballast. The best thing is that it can be repaired/fix. There should be a LG repair shop in your area. Cheaper to bring it in than have a service tech come to your residence.
Should be between $200 to $300 for a repair.

This could be one of two problems. I can't narrow it down any further without having the set in front of me.
1. The plasma panel or the componets which supply electricity to the plasma in the panel have packed up.
2. The video processing unit in the set has gone.
As for the cost of repair, if it's the panel, buy a new TV. It'll be cheaper. If it's the component that supplies the electricity to the plasma on the panel or the video processing unit, expect to pay between 300-400 as a conservative estimate for parts. Labour would be another 100-200.

Unfortunately, the estimate provided by the repair technician may be correct. While screens can generally be replaced, they often prove to be one the most expensive components of any LCD or plasma TV.

If you are in doubt of the prices quoted to you however, I would strongly suggest contacting LG directly for more information. Many manufacturers are able to provide ballpark figures for replacement parts, especially those that are the most prone to damage or susceptible to hardware failure. Remember that labor charges may not be included in any estimate provided to you by LG, so you may wish to confirm with your repair tech if these charges were included in the $1,200.00 you were initially quoted.

The boards responsible for sending signals to your plasma screen has gone bad. Technically speaking, the Y SUS, Z SUS and the Y Buffers are suspect. Sometimes, owners heard a popping sound then the display will go away leaving only sound. It's an expensive repair that can go upwards of $500. Fortunately, LG typically has two (2) years parts and labor warranty for their big screen TVs. LG has a strict repair turn-around time so call it in and you'll have your TV fixed in no time... (realistically, 5-7 days). Best Regards

call 877-543-8325 this is an LG Executive call center and they will fix this for free. I have a 50" plasma I bought january 2006 which is out of warranty by 5 months. They faxed me and the LG repair shop a 30 day warranty for my tv to cover the repair. Just tell them you heard a pop and in my case the picture is distorted. All they need is the model number and serial number and they should take care of it. No arguing needed.

How old is your plasma?

I believe the gas that powers the plasma only has x-hour's life and therfor may need to go for repair in a tv repair shop
