This seems to be a common problem, my R button stopped working as well but I'd only had my ds lite for a few weeks so I just returned it under warranty and got a new one

My DS Lite went through the wash one time. Luckily it didn't go through the whole cycle. It didn't work right away, for the next three days actually. But on the third day it did start working. I didn't have any calibration issues on the touch screen, thank god, but the L and R trigger buttons stopped working. Luckily, I only play Pok'emon, so it didn't hinder me too bad. But yeah, just give it time.
When the screen goes white, that is an indication that it is attempting to read the game cartridge, take out which ever one is set to start by default and blow into it, becareful when blowing into the cartridges that your not spitting on them as well. If this does not work, please leave a comment and I'll try to assist you further.
Seriously, wrap your lips around the button and blow. Make an air tight seal. I know it sounds stupid, I thought so when I read it here http://schlaghund.wordpress.com/2008/03/27/low-tech-ds-lite-lr-button-fix/
Maybe it's the game card, sometimes if it's dirty or not insirted propaly it doesn't work or freezes, try gently blowing the dust off or reinsirting it.
I had the same problem but I solved it.
