Hi, I was given a Hitachi 50UX22BA. It has a very dim/dark/shadowy picture. However, if I stand in front of it, at just the right angle, I can see a picture through the middle. Although the picture is grainy and saturated with strange color. Could this be the convergence problem that many of the Hitachi have? Also the sound and the remote is not working. Not sure if it is related. By the way, I checked for any bad or bulging caps, but all look good.
Thanks for taking time to answer my post. I was speculating on the tubes being weak aswell. However when the "Magic Focus" is pressed, all three colors come up and display brightly. I also suspect the power supply just as you. My question is basically - Has anybody seen this issue before? If so, what was your solution? I have the schematics and can track down the problem, but I'm tring to save some time. I appologize for my rudimentary problem description - repairing this on the side while doing everything else I need to do.
If you are concerned that I might light myself up, I can understand. I used to repair televisions over 15 years ago and I understand the dangers. I've had my share of jolts and have the curly/wavy hair to prove it. If you have experience with these models, I would really appriecate your input.Hi Techman,

OK, I found the solution. Techman was on the right track regarding the power problem. A 9V regulator (I503) had cracked solder joints connecting it to the board. Resoldered them and the TV fired up with no problems. On a side note, the remote control was also dead, but I'm not worried about that since universal remotes work with it.

Re: TV has dim picture
The picture tubes are weak or there is a problem in the power supply. you may not see a bad capacitor as all caps do not swell or leak when they go bad, If you have no TV experience, A TV set is not a place to experiment with.
Glad to hear you fixed it. If you want the original remote to work the menu and such go tohttp://www.remote.comGlad to hear you fixed it. If you want the original remote to work the menu and such go to http://www.remote.com

this model has NO lamp, it uses three picture tubes.
If the problem is the picture is dark, dim, etc. with the set unplugged remove back cover and clean the three large black lens that you will see inside pointing up.
Sorry But your TV is Not DLP,it is projection it has 3 Tubes Red/Green/Blue Deflection Board for this
TV cost $508.35 {Encompass Parts Distrubtion} Has the Boards for this TV 1-800-638-3328
This set uses two convergence chips--both need to be replaced and the set adjusted----If you know how to do good soldering I can tell you where to look and what usually needs to be replaced---Parts cost should be less than 20 dollars if you buy the parts on Ebay---
Most shops charge 300 or more for this type of repair---I just returned home from a set with this type of problem---in home total repair 250 total---If you cannot do the repair I suggest you shop around and find someone who can do it in your home---any good repair person can do this in about 1 hour---I am getting ready right now to do another one near where I live.
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR NEED ADVICE FEEL FREE TO ASK ME...I am here to help people.
Over time, running the TV magnetizes the parts and the electron beams no longer 'shoot straight' ALL your symptoms are caused by magnetism in the metal parts of the TV.
A good tech (like me) can make it like new! Look in yellow pages for a BBB certified Hitichi Proj TV Repairman or ask your church to name one.
Good Luck! They charge $30-150.00hr for this (depending on where you live)
