The picture of my Sony 51HW40 recently started showing red horizontal lines. The lines are only viewable when there is a dark background in the picture, especially, when the background is black. I moved about 3 months ago and I'm wondering if the bumps and vibration of moving caused something to get out adjustment; however, the lines seem to have started about 6 weeks ago. Its possible they were there and it has just gotten worse. Any suggestions on how to fix would be appreciated? Thanks!
These are problems with retrace lines. What you should take a look at are the settings for the convergence / retrace lines Basically you need to open the TV and the job is about 15 minutes to solve the issue with arched lines, either blue, greed, or red.
There is a great how-to guide here:

It is hard to tell from your description what is wrong--confirm actual model number for me.
I am going to attach some photos of what CONVERGENCE troubles look like--they may or may not look EXACTLY like your set but if you have something similar I can help you with more information.

Don't waste your time - go out and get another TV. Chaulk it up to that we have all been scamed by SONY. They knew about the problem, did not choose to make things right. They have become the Fat Cat with the attitude that no one can hurt them. We need to show them that they are wrong and boycot their products. That is the only recourse we have.
It is the CCD and it is a defect, no fix that is economically feasible unless you get a parts cam of Ebay and make one good one. Too bad Sony will not fess up to this model as they have with some other "newer" models like the F717 as it has really put a cloud over the post consumer digital camera market.
This sounds like you may have bad picture tubes. Most likely the green and red tubes. You would have to have them replaced and realigned. I would call a Sony ASC and get an estimate to verify this. An onsite service call could verify if this is what's causing your problem.
sounds like you are seeing retrace lines. you will have to adjuste the screen control. (it would be like a master brightness.) you will have to removed the front bottom plastic from the tv, look for 2 to 4 screws. then gently remove the front. sometimes the also add velcro to help hold it in place. now you need to remove the small plastic or wooden panel/door. in the upper right side you will see a small box with 6 controls.i do nor remember if the top 3 controls are for screen or focus, use a flashlight it is marked on the box which is which. adjusted the screen control to the left slightly to decrease the color you need. the green is the center control. like you said it is more noticable on dark screens, so try & adjust it in a dark romm with a drak seen.
good luck.
