WoW a 10 year old Hitachi TV. I was authorized for these sets. The problem could be one or a combination of many problems. These sets have the stand up type regulator PCBs that went bad all the time! Also could have a Power regulator IC defect. A sweep power supply problem . The flyback did go bad once in a while on these sets. If the set got a power surge, thers like 5 IC's that pop and 12 Diodes that short along with the display IC. If your not a tech You shouldnt attempt to experiment with the set yourself, so It probably wouldnt pay to fix this set If you have to pay a tech to work on it? It all depense on how good the CRT's Are. If you can get a servicer to diagnoise it at a decent price and check the condition of the tubes, Maybe it would be worth investing some money into this set, as these are or were very very good TV's. The balls in your court now. Good Luck

How do I fix My 50 inch Hitachi Ultravision TV?

Likely the lamp in the set has failed here which does make sense if the picture was dim before---a lot of lamps just before failing all the way dim down.

Broken screens on 53'' Hitachi rear-projection TV

I think it would likely work if you trimmed it evenly around the sides in order to maintain the central position. Focus may have to be adjusted but thats all.

Can I upgrade my tv

You can't. Either it came with them or not,.....yours didn't. It's like wanting to make a black & white tv into a color t.v. Although I used to get that all the time.....It's just a tube you pop in!!!! Sorry, the set has to be designed in the first place with that.
