The printer shows the OUT OF PAPER message despite of a fully loaded paper tray.
The out of paper erro can also be caused by worn pickup rollers. These rollers are used to pickup paper from the paper tray and feed it into the printer. When they get worn down they can't grip the paper to pick it up so the printer thinks the paper tray is empty. The pickup roller runs $3.99 and can be installed by the end user, no service center is needed. The part number is RL1-0266 and looks like this:

Thhis error is usually due to a dirty photcell (sensor) in the tray 2 paper feed assembly or a broken sensor flag in the same assembly. Start be removing all cartridges and the transfer belt. Look in the bottom of the printer below the lowest cartridge slot for a removeable cover. That's the area your problem is probably in. I have incuded a link to a free PDF of complete service manual below. Good luck.

Open the top as if you were going to change ink cartridges. Find all rollers yuou can and wipe them with a t-shirt type material dry. Do not use any liquids unless you can get some rubbing alcohol. Turn the wheels and claen them as best as is posible. Open the paper jam door and do the same to all rollers in site. Any way you can get to the rollers, use it. This should solve your problem. Also try fanning your paper before loading it. Thanks, Dana

1) When the printer receives a print job, it selects the tray by trying to match the requested paper type and size with what has been loaded in the trays. Using an “autoselect” process, it searches all available trays for the paper that satisfies the request, starting with the bottom tray and ending with the top tray (tray 1). The printer begins printing the job as soon as it finds the proper type/size.
2) If paper is loaded in tray 1 and tray 1 is set "TRAY 1 TYPE=ANY" and "TRAY 1 SIZE=ANY" on the
Paper Handling menu, the printer will always pull paper from tray 1 first.

Check the media settings for your paper trays. Make sure they are set properly, also check the diver media settings. Is the problem happening with a specific print job? If it is check the page setup for that document.
