Hey Andy, Sometimes when you burn DVD's or CD's with newer burners, you will undoubtedly burn them set to the highest burning speed. Your DVD player may not be able to read them because of this. Try burning a new DVD set to a lower speed. I have to do this when burning DVD's for my sister. Her DVD player is older and when I burn at a slower speed, she is able to read the DVD with no problem.

Just for fun you could try a different type of blank disc such as memorex. or even if it does burn plus and minus try swithching the media you record to either plus to minus or minus to plus. You get the idea. This is if the firmware upgrade suggested by the other person does not resolve your issues.

Go to yahoo and do a search for a firmware update putting in the model number of your recorder or visit manufacturer's website see if they have any firmware update available.

Formats maxell discs, not sonys, then records less than2 mins.and reads dirty disc.. disc style cleaners, unplugging unit for days does nothing to help.store bought movies play perfect.

What you can do is open the Player. You will see a DVD drive in there (same type used in Computers) You can replace it with another IDE DVD writer. This solved many of my client's problems.
I always keep a few IDE DVD roms, and writers handy in my shop. It is the simplest, and cheapest fix.
Hope it helps.

When I record to dvd I can't plan on any other DVD player - can play on the toshiba dvr but nothing else?

Have you closed the recording? If the recording is not closed out, you will have trouble playing the DVD in other players.

It could also be that your DVD player you are trying to play on is too old or not designed to use burned DVDs. I also have trouble playing some burned DVD's in older DVD players, it has to do with how the recording is done, and there is nothing you can do about it. For example, I have a Sony 5 disc changer that came with a surround sound set up... nice DVD player, but will NOT handle DVDs burned on stand alone DVD burners or burned from a PC. It reads the DVD, and displays on the front of the player that it is not a DVD, and shows nothing on the TV.

DVDs Wont play

Check the specs on your dvd player. Not all players will read dvd-r discs. Some players will only read commercially produced dvds. Hope this helps & please take a moment to rate my answer. Thanks.

Hitachi dvd player not reading all dvds

Hello, I'm here try and help your problem, first older DVD players only read certain disc formats, If you have your owners manuel to your DVD player it will tell you what types of discs the DVD player will play. There are seneral types of burnable disc's DVD -, DVD +, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, please looking in the owners manual for the types of discs that the player will read, also in the same secton it will tell the types of formats that it will read DVD Video, DVD ROM, and there is a few others, Next is when you burn DVD's the type of burner you have makes a difference. You will need to find out what format your DVD burn, burns to disc, some of the newer DVD players
read alot of the formats. I would start by finding out what your DVD burns first, then I would suggest buying a DVD player that will read that format. If you have anyother questions please feel free to post them, Thank You and have a great day.
