The batteries are rechargable, when the adaptor
is plugged in they will charge, for the d1420
it has been said they are "unreplacable" but it
is not so, the brand name manufacturers site has
the battery number, which is 02TZ0103.
Even if the batteries can't be removed without
opening the unit casing, a good total battery
tech can replace any battery, if the life of
the rechargable has ended this is a solution.
Check around prices vary. LOL & GOOD CHANCE

Sounds like you have a disc reading problem, in that it can read that there is a disc there, but can't actually read it. May need to have it serviced. If you can't get the disc out, sometimes turning the machine off at the wall, waiting a while, then turning it back on again will spit the disc drawer open. But beware that this may also cause the drawer to lock up. Again, it sounds like it may need to be serviced and have the DVD deck looked at.
I had the same problem but I solved buying "Laser Lens Cleaner " Philips Magnavox after 3 attempts the DVD starts to work fine again. First only 3 min, then 10 min and now the entire CD cleaner and after I left the CD cleaner for 15 min I tried to play the DVD and WORKS!!! perfect!!!
