Keyboard I'm using a Gateway Millenium keyboard for the last two years. All of a sudden the buttons act differently than before. My Num Lock does work not go on or off. It just stays with the green light on. The ". key" on the number automatically goes to "Default E-mail system and takes me off the screen to my inbox. The little volume up and down buttons on the top now control the power and standy by modes of my computer. When I try to turn the volume up or down while listening to a cd or on-line video, the system boots down. As I said these things just started happening and there are no controls on the Keyboard program to set these keys. Is it possible that some kind of key logging vrus has gotten hold of my keyboard? I've run three major virus and spyware applications and no virus or spyware came up. Thanks for any info.

It could be a short in the cable to the computer or maybe corrupted software. To use those extra keys requires extra software so I'd be inclined to uninstall it and then then reboot and then reinstall. As those extra keys can be changed to almost anything you want them to do I'd bet on a software problem. Run the software that's installed on it now and see what it's set on now. It's pretty straight forward to reset everything. Oh and make sure the plug to the computer is plugged in fully

My Gateway laptop - 2 yrs old - just developed problem - some letter keys actualy type numbers ... eg "M" becomes zero,total of nine, while the zero number key types"/". Help!

Sounds like you have turned on the NUM LOCK on the laptop keyboard. If you look closely you will see the numbers on those keys (maybe in a different colour).

You need to turn off NUM LOCK again. On the laptop I'm looking at, this is done by pressing Fn and END together, but the key should be marked with NUM LOCK as well.

Typing numbers instead of letters

Your keyboard has "extra" keys:
* print-screen / system-request
* scroll-lock
* pause / break
* num lock

Press that "num lock" key.
For a laptop keyboard, you may have to hold down the 'FN' key,
at the same time that you press "num lock", to enable/disable this function.

Keyboard buttons coming out with diffrent symbols to what i want

Hi,
You have your Num Lock on, look for the Num Lock key (should be located in the top right of the keyboard) press that key and your keyboard will return to normal.
Sometimes you have to hold down Fn or shift when you press the Num Lock key.

Good luck.

Help

Everyone has to learn! Don't worry. Your NUM lock is one. You should see a light on the computer that looks like a little lock with a number in it (typically the number 9). If that's on, the number keypad in the center of your keyboard will act like a ten-key keypad that you see on the right side of large keyboards. Just hit the Num Lock button on the top right of your keyboard to turn it off.

Let us know how it turns out or if you have any more trouble. Keep learning! It's your best asset.
