Unfortunately, the remote you picked up may be incompatible with your current TV. (I found older universal remotes didn't work with my newest set that had a digital tuner. These were remotes that worked with ~20 year old tvs (analog only). Similarly a new remote might not work with an older TV. Then you get stuck with the result you have.)
Remotes.com has a substitute remote that has all of the functions of the original remote: http://www.remotes.com/remotes/servlet/rs?a=Search&o=c&uid=0&m=EWC19T3&uuid=12792355576670
This one will work.
Your TV has Select, volume and channel change buttons on the front of the TV. So a tedious way to deal with the problem is to move to the TV to change channels. The Volume controls are under the DVD tray. Select (toggle TV/VCR, DVD, and external input) is the first one on the left under the VCR cassette slot. The channel up/down is to the right of the Select.
I wish that I could be of more help.
(However, you might try the Philips Remote Code Finder: http://www.urc.philips.com/
select your country and click on the right arrow. Then find your remote
model and see if you can get a single number for your TV. On the newer remotes I looked at, it only returned a code of 0917 for All Emerson devices.)
