Quite likely this is a manufacturer error which Nikon will fix for free. Go to http://www.nikonusa.com/email_images/nikonusa/service_advisory/coolpix.html I just got mine back - took about five weeks because they were out of stock on the CCD (Charged Couple Device) that they had to replace. Don't give up on the camera. It's worth having it repaired since all it will cost you is to send it to them.
It sure sounds like the CCD is acting hinky on you from time to time. Check out http://www.nikonusa.com/email_images/nikonusa/service_advisory/coolpix.html and call the 800 number in the advisory for better advice from Nikon repair people. This problem seems to be manifesting itself with lots of different kinds of screen displays. Mine just went black. Nikon was very good about making the free repair - all I paid was the cost of sending the camera to them. Don't send your battery, memory card, camera strap or lens cover. All they need is the camera body.
This appears to be a processor problem
There is I am afraid no user remedy.
Depending on the age of the camera, it is possible that it has been subject to a recall because of defective CCD's- Now get onto Nikon customer support and they will advise you accordingly.
They may price a repair - which will be truly astronomical if they do ,so be ready for it.
there is a advisory out by nikon . It seems that sony made the ccd card and it burns out . Nikon will repair it for free here is the link for the advisory. http://www.nikonusa.com/email_images/nikonusa/service_advisory/coolpix.html
hope that this works for you
