After replacing the black cartridge on my HP LaseJet 3800n, I get a message on the printer display 'black cartridge not installed'. I have taken it out and back in and it did not help. I don't know if it means any thing to the problem but I notice a small black plastic piece that looks like it might be out of place but i don't know if that is so or where to put it without causing possible harm! Any suggestions?
Common problem on the hp lj 3800, you'll notice if you shine a torch in the area where you found the broken pieces of plastic, there will be some more, it is this which is stopping the toner cartridge from sitting properly in the printer. Don't worry about the broken plastic the printer will still work ok.

waynechurch, thank you for replying.....your comments are a relief! But how can I get the cartridges to sit properly in order to be recognized by the printer? The black plastic piece (one on each of the black and yellow cartridge slot) are just hanging there, but I'm not sure where to try to place them back at or if these black pieces need to be replaced by a service tech. Please advise......
