Re: "freezes" halfway through dvd
Sounds like theres an obstuction with the slider rail. This is the small metal bar that the laser assy rides on. Also check the drive system. It could be a gear to gear system or a belt to gear system. There could be also a cable blocking the laser from tracking. This is a hard call without seeing the unit But you have to remeber to unplug the unit before taking odff the top. Good Luck

The problem that you might be getting is with your DVD burner on the computer. Usually there is a time that a mechanical problem occurs especially when you're using it all the time. Have you tried the movies on other players just to check if the copy is good or not? If in case the movie also freezes on other players. It could be the DVD that is malfunctioning already. It may be a substandard DVD that is why it is already freezing up. IF is it ok. you might need to have the DVD burner checked for any mechanical issues like the motor that spins the DVD or the lens that reads the DVD.
Thank you for using Fixya, your recommendation is highly appreciated for the free support.
the DVD unit in your sharp is a self contained unit. IT is only repaired by replacing the DVD as a assembly. the cost of replacing may exceed the cost of purchasing a new one.
The most likely cause of your problem is in the brass gear assy that runs the optical pick up in the traverse deck. IT is not an available part.
It goes back to the DVD menu. Some DVD menus have little animations of characters from the movie talking to you telling you to start the movie or something. You could definitely go somewhere with that. Also, some DVD players have a sleep timer on them so they turn off automatically or just show the start up screen which usually says the brand name of the device.
I have the same problem, though I don't recall which exact movies. They were all from Blockbuster. Sometimes they start to play and then halt at the end of track 1 and sometimes don't even make it tot he menu. The same movie will play on our portable dvd player. A Philips rep told me about 6 weeks ago it was a problem with a new security feature on some movies and to watch the website for a possible firmware upgrade to fix it. Now you can't even talk to someone at Philips so I don't know what to think. The "live chat" folks just want to tell you to take it to a repair shop - not much help there.
Use a good dvd cleaner & clean the player. If this works then problem solved, if not then check the back of the dvd for deep scratches. those are the two common causes of the problem you describe. Hope this helps & please remember to rate my answer. Thanks.
it might be that you are playing a dual layer dvd in the player. The player needs to focus on the second layer of the movie, and that might be why the dvd freezes. Leave it there for a while and the dvd should continue if it is this situation.
