My printer prints with a wide black band on the right hand side of my paper and started shading the bottom third with gray bands. It's not only my printer but when I just scan or copy the same line in on the print or saved to the picture I scanned to the computer. I was told by tech support that a part needs to be replaced. Is there a way I can tell what part is bad so that I can figure a price for repair. If the part is too much I'm going to replace the product because it is out of warranty. I would just like to figure out what part is bad. I have an epson stylus 2400 print-copy-scan in one.

Needs Drum If you pull the drum unit out you will see on the drum different shades of color lighter is wear the lines come from. Buy a rebuilt drum much cheaper and they work, may have to reset the drum count if the change drum lite on...
vacuum out the waste toner passages that lead from the drum and transfer belt to the waste toner container. Toner is building up inside the transfer belt and/or drum and has no place to go except onto your paper.
a vertical stripe that is consistent top to bottom could be a laser issue, it has prisms and lenses that could be dirty or even a bit of paper stuck covering the laser light window. Dig into it and look for any debris and clean the lenses.
With other laser printer that problem would be attributed to the drum being faulty. Your model of printer has the toner and drum built into one unit - the "cartridge".
You can try a different cartridge and see if that changes your printing results.
Another reason, which is less likely, but still possible it that your fuser film sleeve need to be changed. The fuser film is located deep within your printer and requires a technician to replace it.
