How do i tighten the hinges on the lcd screen? my screen has become floppy and will not stay open, im assuming it is the hinges that need to be tightened. Does anyone know how i can resolve this issue as my laptop is no good to me as i cant keep it open... Thankyou
There are plastic covers over the hinges, which may be part of the faceplate. being a compaq the hinge screws are most likely torx head screws. compaq used to make a special tool for removing the plastic covers on their laptops. the tool was a bar with a piece of fiberglas circuit board embedded in it. you insert the circuit board into the groove between the top and bottom covers and twist. this is, of course after removing all of the cover screws. some of the cover screws on the display may be hidden under rubber bumpers.

Re: compaq presario 1200
Could be the hinges (which I've seen), could be the LCD back lid (which I've seen), could also include the LCD front frame as collateral damage (which I've seen), and ... could also be the bottom case where the long screws for the hinges bolt on to (which I've seen). I'd assign equal percentages to all 4 areas - they all enjoy breaking.
'Course, worst case scenario (which I've been thru) is that everything is broken (both hinges, lcd back lid, lcd front frame, and lower case). Ouch!
Bottom line is, there's no guessing on this one - you really gotta take it apart to find out which parts are broken, and I can almost guarantee you there'll be more than one. The trouble is: once you take it apart, you may not be able to put it back together again since multiple parts are broken.
These Cpq Presario's have been the most troublesome laptops I've ever dealt with.
The hinges need to be replaced. They can't be fixed.
I have the same problem on my 12XL510 and I am looking for detailed instructions as to how to remove the hinges, anyone?
You can find a pair of hinges on ebay for about $15

Basically the LCD screen is attached to the bottom of the laptop by the hinges. This may require the keyboard to be removed to get access to the LCD connector to the motherboard. The hinges may also be secured by screws at the back of the laptop.
Hi! This solution is very late, but I just came across the original post. Maybe it will still do you some good.
You need to replace the display hinges. There are vendors online who sell them (www.blueraven.com for one) but they are expensive. Right now there is a vendor on eBay offering a set cheap. If you see this solution soon enough, check it out here.

sounds like you have a loose connection ....either into the screen or into the motherboard....the connection between board and screen runs through the hinge brackets and often comes loose after machine has been opened and closed a lot.....need to be comfortable opening up laptops to check the cables as it can be tricky to get to the back of the screen where the end of the ribbon cable is..
You do not need to dismantle to base, you have some star screws under the battary and one either side that loosens the small panel near the screen (where the power button is). The screen cover has screws under the plastic covers then just unclips, be gentle. after that it is self evident
