Connecting and recording sony hdtv, rdr-hx780 recorder, sony dream system

Hi: Just purchased sony RDR-HX780 hdd/dvd recorder. I have Star Choice HD satellite tv with av out, sony KF-42A10 Grand Wega hdtv and a sony dream home theater system. I connected all components using either av or component video cables serially, sat, dvd, dream system, tv.turned on components, setup menu appeared on Vid 5 on tv and worked ok. Tried to watch sat. tv, nothing. Before adding recorder, had sat. hooked to vid 4 on tv,
audio out of box to dream system and comp. vid cables from vid out on dream system to vid 5 on tv to watch dvd's. I want to use recorder as a PVR,
what am I doing wrong?

I have it hooked up essentially that way, but found out that I have to switch to vid 4 to get my hd tv to work. Vid 5 will let me set up the recorder as a pvr but in spite of the things I read on the web, this unit records only in standard def, not hd.so I am switching it to another room to use with a regular set. It was also a pain to configure for watching dvd's when I have two players and use one for sound and the other for video!!!. Much simpler with the other set.
    Thanks for your help.

I think it records in HD on the hard disk, but on the DVD it can't.

I have the same system, except for the TV, I have a project (that part doesn't matter).

From your Sat. go straight to your AV receiver
Again from you Sat. (all of the AV outputs are all live), go out from either 1 or 2 and go to your recorder Line 1 in.
From you AV receiver go to your TV.

All you have to do is hit record and you will record whichever channel you are on. I am having difficulty getting it set up as a PVR, but will figure it out sooner or later.

Hope this helped.

Can not record or playback on sony rdr hxd 890 Help please from a repairer. rdr hxd 890

http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/RDR-HXD890/downloads/FW_DVDR_124 Make sure the ribbon cable going to the laser head from the main board is seated correctly at both ends. Use a scope to verify signals present at the input to the laser. If not then find where it stops on the main board. If it is present then replace the laser mechanism.

Connecting my laptop to DVD recorder and recording onto the recor

You FIRST need a way to get the Signal, INTO the laptop, you need to get a USB to TV/Video Dongle, Now using this and the software that came with it, as well as other software, You Hook up the OUTPUT from the DVD Player, to the Video Input on the USB Dongle, Either, Component (Best) or Composite, (OK) Video, and AV Audio, and set to "Record" on the PC, and "Play" the DVD and then the PC will "Record" the incoming signal from, the DVD player, to the HDD in the PC. Once digitised, and saved it can be manipulated, any way you want.
Now if you want to do the REVERSE IE: Take a signal FROM the PC, to the DVD, then you simply setup the DVD as a Second monitor, use a TV to set it all up, once it is all working on the Laptop and TV, simply swing the Output, away from the TV's Input, to the DVD's Input, and select record, the PC, will then output whatever, to the screen, and whatever is displayed on-screen, will be recorded by the DVD's hard drive.
You First though must setup the PC to have multiple monitors, it is best to get the most up to date drivers and install them in the PC. FIRST. Go to this MS link below it shows you how to set u,setup as CLONE mode, I think will be best, also don't set initial resolution too high to start, set it to say 800x600 32 bit, to start, and work up, until your TV complains and stop. As related once setup, swing the PC's output to the DVD, and record.

Try this: got to www.sony.com mouse over "support" then click on "drivers/software" enter your model #(s) and then you can check for firmware updates, the symptoms that you list, unfortunently are somewhat common when connected via HDMI cables.
Check for updates on both product that you list.
Good luck !

It doesn't do. No can do.Whatever channel you SWITCH ON TO AFTER you started recording be it timer or manual GETS recorded. Whether you switch onto inputs on your TV remote or cable remote IS the one getting recorded.

CANT FIGURE OUT HOW TO RECORD OFF AN 'AV' SETTING

The method is the same as for TV channels; select the input (i.e. view the desired channel), then press the record button. AV1 and AV2 usually are at the end of the channel list, and can be found by pressing the channel UP or DOWN buttons.
