Rinnai infinity hot water service, goes hot and cold...not fun in the shower!

Hi I have moved into a rental property and it has one of the rinnai hot water things now I have a control in the kitchen and one in the bathroom, i set the water to 38 and jump in the shower it is nice and toasty then after a minute or so it goes cold then warms up again then goes cold again constantly until I give up and get out totally annoyed. Neither the kitchen or the shower holds a consistent heat, thought I would see if anyone knew anything about these things as the estate agent seems to have no idea at all and I really want a nice hot shower! Thanks heaps!

We had the same problem - the hot water would only be hot for 3 -5 minutes and shut off, then we had to turn the water off, wait a few minutes, and do it again. VERY FRUSTRATING.

Solution: The Rinnai serviceman showed me the heat-exchanger blower/fan: It was clogged with dust and moths.

Another clue: Our Rinnai was extremely noisy when the heat came on. After the fan was cleaned and replaced, it is nearly silent.

If you are reasonably machanically inclined:
TURN THE BREAKER / POWER OFF to the unit.

The blower-fan is located in the lower central area of the unit (at least on our unit). If you draw imaginary north-south, east-west lines through the center of the unit, the fan is in the lower-left quadrant. There is a spring clamp securing the black rubber accordian-like tube to the fan. There are two screws that secure the fan to the unit. there are two plugs that connect to the fan, as well as a third air-flow sensor that should be removed. then you can look at the fan unit, as well as the grill on the underside of the heat-exchanger that should be cleaned.

My thought was to go out and get a simple bug-screen, and place it over the air-input outlet vent going outside, but the repair guy said that although it may sound good, if that screen ever gets clogged, or reduces airflow to the Rinnai, then the unit will work harder, or even shut off, giving the same problem,

Go to the controller, if you can find book go to the page that shows the controller and check the water flow comming thru the water heater, if waterflow is falling below .06water heater is shuting down. Your water pressure may be to low.

We had the same issues. Couldn't even run a bath.

We found that the dip switchs weren't set correctly for our ELEVATION during install.

We have a Rinnai r75lsi. Refer to user manual page 34 for correct switches per elevation levels.
We changed ours to our correct elevation and have been running consistent hot water since. Hope this helps.

We have a problem with our Rinnai 24 hot water service. Hot water goes hot and cold. Does not keep to 38 degrees temperature when showering.

Do You know if there is an anti scald valve in the shower valve? If so it may be scald up with corrosion and need replaced! To see if this could be the problem, flush the toilet next to the shower while the shower is running. If temperature changes in shower I would say that is your problem! If You need to replace it, it would be cheaper to do it yourself! They should be videos on Youtube on how to do it! Good Luck! Regards!

I have a rinnai 24 infinity model reu-242w-a. It ison the roof of a 3 storey townhouse we are moving into.Tthere are no remotes. It was working fine on demand until a plumber drained the system on the...

Ask the plumber who did the mods. to come a check that he hasn't crossed a hot/cold pipe. Really sounds like he has, this would cause hot water to mix with cold. Is the water hotter further away from where he did his work? This would be a clue. Easy way to check is to turn off the water to the hot water system, should be a valve on the middle pipe going in to the heater. This should turn off all water to all your hot taps. If you still have water at any hot tap or shower then the pipes have been crossed.

Rinnai gas water temperature keep alternating from hot to cold

A fault often found with these units is due to insufficient water flow. Usually this causes specifically the shower to run hot and cold. Try turning on more than one hot supply; if this fixxes the fault you will need to try and increase water flow. Most new tapware/showerware have water flow restictors built in. These are the cause of many problems with continous flow heaters such as the Rinnai. In taps they are usually located in the spout if it unscrews. In showers try the shower hose. Find them and take them out. Also make sure your mains supply to the house is on full.
There are more technical faults but this is something you can easily try first.

Hi there, I have a rinnai 20 ,the water heats up

Usually this type of fault is down to poor water flow. Basically you are asking the unit to work at a level below it's minimum output. Easy thing to try is to check any filters or water flow limiters in your tapware. Usually these are in the nozzle of the tap. I often take these out. The inifinty reduces water flow anyway and there is no reason to have water limiters. Try turning on two taps at once. If this stops the fault then you definately need to increase your water flow. Make sure the mains water is turned on full. Aslo you can check the cold water filter on the infinity. It's just above the cold water isolation tap (middle pipe as you look at it), turn that off first, the filter is a round plastic nut, unscreww it and clean the filter. Reconnect, turn you mains water back on.
There are other faults but this is by far the most common.

Rinnai Infinity 26 hot water system set to 55 degrees with remote temp adjuster. Water only luke warm for showers. Burnner working, water & gas pressure ok. Any thoughts ... Stephen

If you aren't getting any error codes, then the heater is probably doing its job. Your problem is probably somewhere in your plumbing system. The most common reason you get this sort of problem is due to cold water mixing in the hot water system. There are a number of causes for a "cross connection" :

-Faulty check valve
-Missing check valve on reciculation return line
-Faulty shower cartridge
-Thermostatic mixing valve set too low
-Faulty thermostatic mixing valve
-Faulty anti-scald valve

The easiest way to confirm a cross connection is to: 1) shutoff the cold water entering the tankless heater 2) open hot water valves around the house. If you still have water flowing at your hot water fixtures, then you have a cross connection.

I need the manual for a Rinnai Infinity 26 hot water system

you can get it off the rinnai web site they have a spot on there to get the internet manuel,, but from what you are saying you may need to adjust the thermostat, or the temp, remember even though you will have endless hot water it still takes the smae amount of timed for the hot water to get to your faucet,, not only that make sure your shower heads aren't holding back to much water pressure, if you don't have enough water going thru the unit it will not stay lit, if will come on and go off, judt to dstisfy the unit,, make sure the filter is clear, on the cold side there is a cap screw if you take it off there is a screen in side you just pull it out and clean it and reinstal it,,
