Question about Nikon Coolpix 4600 Digital Camera
No firmware upgrade available yet, but did you set the camera settings to the TYPE of battery you are using? Go to Setup, chose Battery, then set type - alkaline, lith, metal hyd, etc and see if that helps.

I had this exact same problem. i had taken out a 3 year guarantee with jessops where i bought it so i just sent it back to them and they repaired it for free. it now works :) i don't know what they did so i can't help personally but i know that if you send it to someone who knows their camera stuff they should be able to fix it :)

As far as I know the "batteries exhausted" message is unique to nikon, and it's also a relatively common problem with nikons. What was wrong with the HP? After you get the batteries exhausted message, does the camera really stop working, or can you keep shooting? I know it as an incorrect reading problem, that you can keep shooting regardless of the message. Can you get anything at all out of the batteries, or does it give the message and shuts down? Are you using NiMH batteries(you should), or alkalines?(not a good idea, The internal resistance is too high and because of the heavy current load, you wind up with too much voltage drop). Don't throw away your "exhausted" ones. They will still perform in lower current devices such as a walkman, they just don't cut it for a digicam. (when you do throw it, do us all a favor and use a battery disposal facility ;] ). The error might clear with a firmware upgrade. Good luck!

When a System Error message appears on the LCD screen of the
Nikon Coolpix 4600 this usually means the camera has a fault that will need
repairing. There are two things you can try first. The first one is to try a
different memory card. The second is to remove the batteries for 24 hours and
then put them back in the camera and try again. If this does not work contact nearest Nikon Service Center.
Good Luck, do rate the solution if helps
