Question about Mad Dog Multimedia Dominator (MD-12XDVDRW-SE) (MD12XDVDRWSE) DVD±RW Burner

3 Answers

Dominator 4in1 year purchased 2003

Recently having problems burning DVD-R that are 16x. Was burning 8x fine but haven't had the need to burn lately. When I try to burn a dvd video ts file my Nero program says illegal disc. I went back to the place I purchased the dvd-r from and they said I should be able to burn on these but not at 16x speed if all my dvd burner is rated for 8x. Is there something I'm not doing right? P.S. They were nice enough to give me a new batch of discs. Never had this problem before. Thank you for any help James L. Kiah

I've had the same problem. I've tried TDK and Sony I figured I was safe with those known brands. I'ts getting harder to find 8x dvds as some places don't carry them anymore.

Hi, I was wondering if you found a solution. I have the same problem, same manufacturer of disc (Mirror DVD-R) as one the worked but now 16x instead of 8x. I will keep trying and post a solution if I find one.

Some disc brands just don't work with certain burners, and that can result in the said error. Did the store give you a different brand when they replaced your old batch? this error can also be a result from burning too much to the disc, or from trying to copy protected content. If you're burning movies, I would suggest that you close all other programs while burning, and burn at the lowest speed. Regardless to the error, you'll get a better quality result. Good luck

SOURCE: Writes to 8x dvds but not 16x dvds. Why?

It could be lower quality media that the drive does not like for 16x writing. I would try a higher quality blank DVD. It could also be the software you are using. I recommend imgburn from http://www.imgburn.com/ which is a great little free app. This program is a very no nonsense burning app without the bloat of most other programs.

If you buy a single or 5 pack of high end media and use imgburn yet it still will not burn at 16x speeds I would contact Mad Dog as you may have a bad drive.

Emachines 5240 dvdrom Can you tell me if I can fit any dvd rom into my desktop 5240 it says 8x max but items I have seen for sale are all 16 x. also can you give me the original serial no...

Hey, there's no way to give you the original serial number unless we can see it. There should be a barcode or label somewhere on the machine that has that. Sometimes its also on the bottom.

As far as the DVD Rom, it will fit any dvd, but the fastest it can write(burn) a DVD is 8x. You can use a 16x DVD just fine. The 16x on the DVD's just means thats the fastest a burner can write to that dvd. Some burners can write 16x, and others like yours burn at 8x.

Hope this helps.

I have a LG GE20 DVD Rewriter Is a DVD+RW disc a format that is editable and suitable for this unit?

The LG G20 DVD Rewriter is an advanced external burner that supports 'editable' Rewritable DVD+RW disk.
As a generic comment, not all writable/rewritable media are made equal and problem with branded & unbranded disks are not uncommon, so stick to brands that work for you for your specific unit!
The following is the advertised support for your unit, hope it helps:

Cannot record on 16X DVD-R

You will need to call Funai 1 800 605 8457 give them your brand / model number and expose your problem - they should be able to send you an upgrade disc but it will cost you -
If you want my advice - you DO NOT need a 16x disc inside a DVD recorder - the optical drives used on DVD recorders and even worse a Funai drive are quite bad as it is in terms of writing strats for higher speeds - you are better off recording at 8x on a 16x disc.this will provide better burns ( lower PIE/PIF errors and jitter %).

Slow Writer

Hey there dhruvr, your problem is minor. Even though your DVD drive has max speed of 16X, the software you use to burn can vary this according to their default setting. ranging from 4-16 times. You can change these by opening the extra option boxes, when you are burning, or going into the settings for each of your burning programs. You should only have to do this once. It will remember your last setting. Good Luck!

Cannot write cds at lower speed like 8x

  1. Try to Use Nero or Easy CD creator software for better output.....
  2. Try burning Verbatim 16x DVD+R at 16x first and then burn another of the same type at 8x. And then compare the results. Most times, burning 16x-rated DVD+R/-R media at 12x or 8x will result in fewer PIEs/PIFs.

Whether 1x is better than 8x is another issue. Personally, I prefer 8x speed for most media I use these days (rated at between 4x to 16x but mostly 8x.)

    Problems recording DVD-R 16X

Try this download page to update your firmware from 25/10/05, so if you bought your writer before this date maybe this will work, otherwise buy 8x discs. http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/firmware.htm#710 The faster the discs are burned the more chance of errors there are, you should write at slower speeds for better quality.
