After view months of using the notebook (windows 7 hp) following problem started to occure after pressing the start button: "operation system not be found". then I hear clicking the harddrive (640 Serial ATA 7200 1/min). I had to restart 3-4 times till the pc catched up with the operatiing system. meanwhile I am too afraid to switch off the pc at all. so I only use the "safe energy status" to "close" the laptop. How can I solve the starting problem?
Turn it off. Symptoms suggest hard drive failure. Use of s taking a physical battering. This may damage data beyond recovery. The drive Take it to a shop. Your other choice: Oddly, freezing the hard drive sometimess temporaily fixes the drive long enough to recover data. Replacement of the hard drive is the likely fix. Unless you want to try to freeze the HD and copy data off of it quickly, only a shop specializing in data recovery might recover such. Hopefully youhave backed up data to another drive. You might want to consider a new laptop, after you eye the possible cost of repair and/or data recovery.

you have gone into XP's backup and restore and reset your dell to a previous point right http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb490854.aspx ?and if it was this way the first time you booted up it might have been installed wrong and it will need to be manualy serviced unfortunately most companies don't give restore disks any more, if your dell came from a retailer and it is still under 3 month the store should reinstall xp for you and if it isn't the store still might do it, dell might also offer a mail in fix for ya, if that doesn't work you can always go to best buy's geek squad and when you get it fixed make sure to make a backup disk using windows backup and restore, vista has software to use to make a back up disk i dont know about XP
geek squad or dell might haveto do that for you but it could cost you
try to take out both battery and power adaptor. press and hold the power button for ten secods while both are not connected. then connect the power adapter only. try to turn it on. if it still does not turn on then most likely you have a problem with the hardware. you might need to have it checked out with an outside tech already.

Oh boy, you need to call dell for that. the hdd is locked and only dell can give you the password. dont try unknow passwords its not gonna work. the password is related to the secuity of the machine. call dell and they will give you the password. in case by any reason you cant call dell. you need to repalce the hdd then. call dell they will give you the password free.

In Safe mode drivers, in your case the video one, aren't loaded. Uninstall the one that you have now. If it's the same then probably it's a hardware problem. To be sure boot from a Linux Live-CD like http://www.pclinuxos.com/ and press the Escape key - this way you will see the boot-log in real time, look for error messages.
Remove all floppy disks, CDs, and DVDs from your computer, and then restart your computer.
Click the Start button , click the arrow next to the Shut Down button , and then click Restart.
Do one of the following:
If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you'll need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to highlight the operating system you want to start in safe mode, and then press F8.
