My daughter took my camera to Mexico. During her stay, the camera would not turn on properly. The same thing happened to one of her friend's camera (DSC-W7). Her friend had her camera cleaned and now it works fine. The sand in the wind was the problem. The person at Best Buy said it was not very dirty (it was still under warranty). Can I clean my W1 myself? It look like the fine grit in the lens is the problem.

Re:
If you find any friction or noisy movement of lense assembly while switching on the camera, its probably fine sand particals stucked in ths lense assembly. pls do not try to operate or fix the problem as it would be needing thorough cleaning by an expert.

It sounds as if it may have been damaged during shipping. If you had insurance on it, contact the shipping company to file an insurance claim.
Else, the batteries may have gone bad during shipping. Replace the batteries and try again. If it still doesn't work, contact the company you bought this camera from for replacement or repair.
If it's still within the 7 days take it back. The Nikon FA was a great camera but time and lack of use has probably caused the shutter to seize. To put this camera back into serviceable condition for any photography will require a clean, lubrication and adjustment by a qualified camera person. I'm in Canada and have cameras service fairly regularly older ones to have this type of work performed will cost about $120.00 Canadian. The instructor is probably asking for the students to have a manual camera to be able to learn from the ground up which to me is the best way but, these old cameras are failing just because the grease is drying out. There are still a lot of good used working camera out there I just bought a great Canon Elan 7Ne for $199.00 CDN and it's a 2005 model the last year of the Canon film cameras. I guess it depends on if you want to spend the money (and time) to get the FA repaired or step into something for a little more money that works properly right from the get go.
You can try wash again in pur ewater with out batteries and leave to dry in hot press or very warm area of house for a few days 5 days min. then put back battery and say a nice little prayer before you press the pwer button and who knows The Man above may answer your request.
Your problem may be due to weak/worn out batteries or corrosion on the
battery contacts inside the camera
which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the
camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the
batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with
a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush,
steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen
into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of
the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears
the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, chances
are that your batteries need to be replaced because they're just too
worn to properly power the camera.
And then, of course, there's the possibility that your camera may have
a problem that requires professional repair.

I just repaired this problem on my daughter's camera today! I took out the 4 tiny screws that hold the front cover on and discovered gunk and goo that were keeping the lens from retracting. Please note the exact position of the screws. They are different sizes. I then very carefully cleaned all the residue using Q-tips dipped in rubbing alcohol. It worked perfectly! Just like new.
You are probably in play mode and not in camera mode. Switch the camera back to camera mode (move the witch so its in the camera position- you will see a small camera icon) in order to take pictures.
