SOURCE: cold air, engine light on, & gets hot very quick
Check coolant level first. That's your likely culprit.
SOURCE: F250 Diesel engine won't start in cold weather
check your glow plug relay! located on the right side head
SOURCE: i have a 1991 taurus
This is not a ECU or 'module' Taurus' have very resilient computers, and rarely ever go bad on these cars. This issue is empirically a coolant temperature sensor. if it is running hotter then normal, you may want to consider changing the temperature sensor for the indicator as well since they are basically the exactly the same thing just go to different components (ie. one goes to the computer the other to the gauge)
SOURCE: starts then dies & won't restart
check fuel pressure, should be 40 psi.
try 2 things
spray starting fluid in air intake to see if it will stay running. It's fue then.
Try turning key to on nd wait 5 seconds for system to build pressure and pump to shut off. Turn key off, wait for relay clcik noise or 10 seconds. then turn key to ON again and wait 5 seconds to build pressure again. Then start engine. If it starts better, you have a bad check valve in the fuel pump or a bad pressure regulator on the fuel rail (unlikely).
