Re: Monitor keeps turning on and off
OK All these Compaq's have a Power Supply problem, or a Horizontal Voltage problem.. meaning they are on the way out. The SMPSU's in these units often fail along with the Horizontal Drive Circuitry. I think it is time for a new one? Repair of such a unit would barely be "Ecconomical" IMHO.

Try turning on the monitor before the Compaq system box, if Win is doing what it should, it will 'find' a 'new device' and reinstall the drivers for it.
It may not look right but you can change the resolution after it boots up.
Do you see the BIOS splash screen or anything?
Try booting into safe mode by pressing F* as soon as you power on the computer. If the monitor works, then it is a bad driver. Roll back to a previous restore point, boot to last known good coonfiguration. Last Known good configuration is available from the same as the safe mode screen.

You may have to find the driver for this monitor before connecting the new monitor up. Go to the manufacture of the monitor and search in the support area for downloads and drivers. Load the driver then connect your new monitor up and see if it works. If not, then use a good monitor to power up first. Then, with computer on, put new monitor on and see if it will locate a driver.
