Question about Canon ZR200 Mini DV Digital Camcorder
My ZR200 has been doing the same thing for the past year and a half. I have not called Cannon yet, but i did notice that whenever I charge the camcorder next to the TV the lines often return. My unoffical thought is that the magnetic field that surrounds componets such as a TV may be disrupting something in the field of the camcorder when itis so close. Do not take this as the gospel, it is something I will be continue to monitor. But mine always starts working after I move it from the perch by the TV. Just a thought.

Same issue

My post was from Jan 26. Sent my Canon MV800i into Canon directly under warranty for repairs (after being told by local distributor that the head was gone). Also previously tried head cleaner but made no difference. The camera came back 2 weeks later fixed, but the report said there was no fault found ! Still no closer to finding out what caused it...just hope it doesn't happen again.

I had the same problem twice with my ZR80. The first time Canon fixed free of charge since it was in warranty. It worked for 3 years, and I just had problem again. I sent it to Canon and they wanted $180 to fix... I called Canon and asked for a manager and told him that I read about a recall on it in 2005, they are fixing it for free now. Check out information about recall in october 2005.

What do you mean by "Its only when i go to record or view previous recording"? in what situation doesn't it show the gray lines? What about the viewfinder? do you get lines there aswell? If you don't see the gray lines when you transfer the video out of the camera, then you don't have a head problem, a screen problem maybe. Don't hurry to use cleaner tapes because they can hurt the head, the actual cleaning procedure is one that scrapes the head and leaves some damage. more info please

This problem is exactly what we are experiencing. The digitally recorded items are fine with no lines on the small screen or the TV via the cables. When tapes that were prerecorded (and viewed in good condition before) are put in to play both the small screen and the view transferred to the TV screen through the cables have thick horizontal lines evenly spaced down the screen. The speech is slightly distorted every few seconds and at the same time the pictures slightly distorts and pauses as well.
Any suggestions?
ZR200. While recording, everything seems fine. When play back or watch on TV, five evenly spaced thick grey lines appear with some voice disturbance. Tried head cleaner minidv dry tape with no luck. Tried remove and reinstalling battery - no help. Any idea?
I just started having this same problem out of the blue. Has anyone called Canon? First when you tried to play back a tape it wouldn't play anything. Then I fast forwarded and then rewound and it started playing with the gray lines. Thought it might be a dirty head but from reading here it seems cleaning the heads is not the solution. Any ideas on a fix?
I have the same problem and my camera is fairly new. I spent a good chunk of money on this camera and what do I get? I get a playback mode that have gray lines and no pictures. I am going to call canon but I am glad to hear I'm not the only one have the same problem. Maybe we can get a rebate since this is such a common problem. We have to get together on this one guys. Well I will post a update if I hear from Canon anytime soon.
Have just experienced the same problem with MV800i. Originally viewed the tapes thru viewfinder and transferred onto PC...all OK. Discoveredthat I had not transferred all video, so inserted tape back into camcorder only to discover thick grey lines across the viewfinder screen and also visible on PC. Audio slightly distorted also. The remaining video was of a recent trip overseas, so this is all the footage we have. ANy help would be greatly appreciated. I also inserted another 2 tapes that we used (that transferredto PC earlier OK0, and they now have grey lines also !! Must be a camcorder issue.
PLEASE HELP !!
Same problem - screen looks fine but in playback, they are thick gray horizontal lines across the screen. I also put in tapes I had previously viewed that were fine and had the same problem. Am calling Canon now and will update once I talk to them . . .
I am yet another owner having the same problems. At one point I had grey bars across the screen and they didn't appear when I downloaded to my computer. After some more use the screen went completely grey. I purchased a head cleaner, used it once, and my camera worked like new. After one hour of recording it went back to the grey lines, only this time they appeared on my computer, in the view finder, and on the LCD. I tried several different tapes and cleaned the head again - no luck. I talked to Cannon about the issue an they had no resolution and requested me to send the camera in and pay a minimum of $175 to look at it. Frustrating. If anyone else has luck with Cannon, please post.
I also have been having this problem with my canon, it's not that old and I have lots of priceless video that I have not been able to transfer to dvd yet. I would like a solution!
I have the same problem. I've had this problem twice before.....sent it to Canon to be fixed.....it stays fixed for awhile, not it is doing the same thing again! Last time on my receipt they said they had fixed the "mechanical Chassis"....but apparently they didn't do a very good job at it! I don't use the camcorder that often.....maybe fill up a 60 minute tape every 3-4 months. So, so, so frustrating! I guess I'll be contacting Canon again!

I have had the same problem along with the tape not loading problem. 1 good smack corrected the tape loading problem and for now another good smack also corrected the gray line problem. Hopefully it will at least stay corrected long enough for me to be able to transfer all my tapes to my computer and then throw this camera in the trash and not give me any more heartburn.
