Is the Brother VX810 similar to the Brother Model 268? Would a user manual for a VX810 work for my Brother Model 268?

Appears to be the same bae machine with a slight difference in the needle position selector.

Babylock rachel.... when I turn my stitch dial to 2 I get an e8 error, what does that mean my machine is brand new?

If it's brand new, take it back where you purchased it. It should be covered under store policy or warranty.

The manual usually describes error codes in the troubleshooting section. Or, you can search online:

Make + Model + the words "error code E8"

You didn't provide the make & model of your machine, so we can't even begin to give you a best guess.

Search the internet for:

Make + Model + error code E8

and see if comes up with anything.

Code E8 on NS30LE how to fix this

An "E8" message appears on the panel.
Description: You tried to select a different stitch while the twin needle sewing setting was selected (the key is lit).

Select an appropriate stitch, or use the single needle sewing.
Note Each time a key pressed or an incorrect operation is performed, a beep is sounded.

For a correct operationOne beep is sounded.
If an incorrect operation is performedTwo or four beeps are sounded.
If the machine locks up, for example, because the thread is tangledThe sewing machine continues to beep for four seconds.
The machine automatically stops.
Be sure to check for the cause of the error, and correct it before continuing to sew

There is no free download available for model 6000 but you ca get a free download for model 6500 from the below link.Atleast you ca get some idea if you view the manual for 6500 as it is the same 6000 series.

Yes the manual for Brother sewing machines are available from their support site: http://www.brother-usa.com/manuals/default.aspx?ProductGroupID=3#.TyH3fIFtNG9 . I believe the NS40 is the Brother Innov-is 40. The direct link to the manual is http://www.brother-usa.com/ModelDocuments/Consumer/Users%20Manual/UM_Innov_%C3%ADs%2040_%20NEW%20Limited%20Edition_EN_1114.PDF . An E8 error means that a stitch was selected after the twin-needle setting has been selected. Cancel the twin-needle setting and then select a stitch. Then if you are using a twin-needle setting, adjust the machine for the twin-needle setting.
