If the computer you are using is a name brand computer (HP, Dell, Gateway, ect), the CD key is printed on a sticker on the computer its self. If this is a CD you purchased from a store, the CD key is on a sticker on the case holding the CD. If you can not locate the CD key in the above manner, you can contact Microsoft for a discounted re-issue of the key.

ok if it is windows xp and u want to format it then what u can try is that if u have the option for the complete pc restore,then what u need to do is that shut down the computer completely and then all u need to do is that shut down the computer completely from the power button and then press and hold down the "ctrl" button and then press the power button only once and keep tapping the f11 key on the keyboard....and follow the instruction that says complete factory setting and then it will give u some message from symantec and then click on ok and the computer will be format,all u need to do is follow the instruction very carefully.....
or u can try once again,shut down the computer and then press the power button only once and keep tapping f12 key on the keyboard and then highlight the cd drive and then put nthe xp disk in and keep tapping enter and enter and enter untill it will take u to the windows set up screen and then it will give u the option to press R to repair and esc to continue and press esc on the keyboard and then delete all the partition the instructuin will be given just read it carefully and it will be formatted........hope this will work take care...

call Microsoft and give them the date and the confirmation number. they should be able to give you another serial number.

If you bought it directly from Dell or an authorized reseller, there should be a Certificate of Authenticity sticker on the bottom, assuming you didn't remove it.
If you did, unfortunately there is nothing anyone will be able to do for you, Dell included(I've worked Dell CS).
If you are able to load into windows, you may be able to recover your product key through windows, google is your friend.

all windows cds have the key on them if you explore your cd look for i386 and look for a text document called unetended (i might have misspelled it) go to the bottom of the text and you cd key should be there....try that out it worked for me
