    Problem solved!
Connecting pipe to the pressure switch had come adrift at the bowl end. Bloody hard to see and to access, but with the adroit use of a mirror and torch manged to locate and reconnect.
Everything seems to be working in the correct sequence.
Thanks for the helpful suggestions, I now know more than I did about washing machines.

General Electric Washing Machine want agitate. The washer fills, spins, drains but simply stops agitating or washing during different cycles. I have checked the lid switch, coupling under the agitator and...

The water level switch may be going bad. As the water level rises to the proper level, it switches a set of contacts inside to stop the water fill and cause the machine to start agitation. Make sure machine is empty before you replace the water level switch---it works off of air pressure from a small hose attached to it.

My wahser just stopped working it filled with water and then started agitating and then all the sudden stopped please help

When the cycle doesn't advance, it's probably the timer or a cold-water supply problem:

  • It's the timer, if your washing machine fills with water and begins agitating, but the timer never advances--or if the washer is in a spin cycle and the timer won't advance. Then you need to replace the timer.

  • It may be a cold-water supply problem, if the washing machine fills with water, agitates, drains, and spins, but then doesn't fill with rinse water. See There's no cold water

My washing machine is stuck on agitate. It filled and agitated then stopped. I can set it to spin only and it will spin and empty the tub, but for a regular wash cycle it starts on agitate and stops...

You may have broken teeth on the gears in the timer assembly. Do you have a habit of "whipping" the timer around? In other words, turning the timer fast.

    Will not drain or spin

Unless you jarred the machine it's the timer. You can check this by bypassing the lid switch and seeing if it will cycle.
