2007 Ford Explorer Sport-Trac automatic trans shift lever release.

The console mounted shift lever will not dis-engage from park. The small chrome button is locked, and will not release the shift lever. After about 6 attempts to shift from park, it will finally dis-engage. Is this an electrical problem, or a mechanical problem?

2002 ford Explorer Sport Trac I have the same problem.

  • Anonymous May 22, 2009

I am having the same problem (just started yesterday intermittenly). The button sometimes won't depress in order to move it out of park. I am researching others who have this problem and trying to find out if they have solutions that have worked. So far, my Ford dealership has told me they have had to replace the entire shifter assembly because they are made of some pretty cheap plastic materials.

Most common is a failing brake light switch. If the brake lights don't come on when the shifter is stuck and they work when the shifter works you need a new switch.

SOURCE: 2005 Sport Trac Cruise Control does not engage

If you can please look under the hood and find the Air filter, and follow that all the way to a round metal part (Throttle body) If you can see it there will be a coil, and on that coid will extrude a curved plate with a cable(throttle cable) attached to it running all the way back inward toward the back of the engine, and next to that there should be a second cable (crusie control cable). This cable is pulled on when you engage the cruise control, by a black box next to the fuse box.
If the Cruise control cable is near by try to reattach it and if it is damaged then have your dealership or some one mechanically inclinded to replace the tip ( if plastic) or replace the cable.
If that didnt help please get back to me

Look in the owners manual and see if they have a circuit breaker or relay instead of a fuse. It could be bad and you would not see it.

Question moved to model category.

They are called blend door actuators. You just check them all for operation. You have one that has failed or become unclipped. Details in the link

2006 ford sport trac will not shift out of park

Look under the dash, on the brake pedal arm. There are one or two switches that activate brake lights and/or shift unlock. Check for loose mounting nut or a missing rubber nubber. Is the brake pedal coming all the way back up? Look on the floor for something not usually found there. These switches are adjustable and it may be as simple as adjusting them. Have a helper look for brake lights on and shift lever unlocked while you push and release the switches with your finger. Depress the brake pedal to get it out of the way. Remember to set the park brake first. Could just be a bad switch or loose connector. Check fuses and the bulbs. Is shifter fully in Park? Also try jiggling the turn signal lever.

Lubracite Automatic shifter.

Yes, it can be oiled -- and greased after oiling is a good idea as well. It usually makes a big difference. Follow it from transmision all the way to firewall or floor. Lubricate what you can inside vehicle, ia addition.

More info, let me know.

STALLS AT RED LIGHT OR STOPPING

Sounds like you may have an Idle air control valve going bad. It is a round shiny chrome cylinder with an aluminum mounting block. It should be located somewhere close to where the air inlet tube meets the throttle body just behind the throttle body. My advice would be to carry a small hammer or wrench with you and when you start experiencing the problem lightly tap on the chrome part. If your problem corrects itself then you need a new Idle air control valve.
